World Cup 2018 – Team Top Goalscorer Betting

Bettin Tip 58An interesting market to look at for World Cup betting is the Team Top Goalscorer one. Although this can be something of a lottery, there is money to be made in this market if you can make an educated pick. The 2014 World Cup saw a joint-record amount of goals scored, and you would expect that record to be broken this time around with even more teams involved.

The tournament in Russia is now just a week away and with players and managers making their final preparations, now is the perfect time to take a look at some interesting bets in the team top goalscorer market. In this article, I will be taking a look at four of the teams involved in the competition, and giving you tips on who I think will finish as their top scorer. All of the odds in this article come courtesy of Coral and are accurate at the time of writing.

England

England turned in their worst ever performance at a World Cup Finals in 2014, picking up their lowest ever points total and being eliminated at the group stage for the first time since 1958. England scored just two goals in the tournament, with Daniel Sturridge and Wayne Rooney grabbing one each. This time around, England have a much easier group and they will be expected to score more goals and progress further in the competition.

As you would expect, star striker Harry Kane is the favourite to be England’s top scorer (10/11) and when you consider his recent form, he looks like a solid bet. Outside of him, my money would be on Raheem Sterling. The Manchester City winger has been the target of some unfair tabloid newspaper criticism in recent weeks, but after a superb title winning season with Manchester City, he should come into this tournament full of confidence and with a point to prove. Sterling is available at 7/1 to be England’s top scorer, and he definitely has a great chance in my opinion.

Raheem Sterling – 7/1 (Coral)

Croatia

Croatia have a very talented core of players in their squad, with Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic in midfield, boosted by the attacking talents of Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Perisic. They have been drawn alongside Argentina, Iceland and Nigeria in Group D and will be confident of progressing. In the recent friendly against Brazil, Real Madrid midfielder, Luka Modric played a lot further forward than he does for his club and at odds of 10/1 to be Croatia’s top scorer he could well be worth a look. The diminutive midfielder has taken penalties in recent games, and if Croatia do well in this tournament he will have a huge role to play in it. I think there could well be money to be made on backing Modric here.

Luka Modric – 10/1 (Coral)

Portugal

Portugal have been drawn alongside Spain in Group B, and I think that Cristiano Ronaldo’s side could struggle at this tournament. Portugal were rather fortunate to win EURO 2014, and their ageing squad could well come unstuck in a group that also includes two solid sides in Iran and Morocco. Obviously Cristiano Ronaldo (8/15) is the standout pick to be top scorer here, but controversially I do not think that he will achieve that feat. I’m backing Manchester City winger, Bernardo Silva, to be the main man for Portugal in Russia, and the 12/1 odds on him look like fantastic value. Silva has looked excellent whenever he’s been given the chance by Pep Guardiola and I think he’ll relish the chance on the biggest stage of all.

Bernardo Silva – 12/1 (Coral)

Senegal

Senegal have been drawn in what looks to be the most open group of the World Cup, with the African side set to face off against Colombia, Japan and Poland. Any of those teams could easily qualify for the next round if things click and Senegal will be hopeful of progressing. Much of the goalscoring burden will fall on the shoulders of Liverpool forward Sadio Mane. He is available at 5/2 to be Senegal’s top scorer and that looks like a great bet to me, especially considering how good he looked in the Champions League Final. The forward scored 20 times for Liverpool in all competitions this season and will relish the chance to be the main man for his country in Russia.

Sadio Mane – 5/2 (Coral)
