World Cup 2018: Lowest Scoring Team – Betting Preview
With the World Cup Finals now less than three weeks away, excitement is ramping up at the thought of a month’s worth of top footballing action. The World Cup Finals also represent an excellent chance to make some money with there being endless markets available on the tournament and plenty of value to be had.
An interesting market to bet on at this summer’s World Cup Finals could well be the Lowest Scoring Team market. There is plenty of value to be had in this market and although it can be something of a lottery to predict the lowest scoring side, you can still make an educated guess. The lowest scoring sides at the 2014 World Cup were Cameroon, Iran and Honduras. Iran and Honduras were two sides you would expect to struggle and they certainly did, finding the net just once.
When we look at the odds on offer for this World Cup, Saudi Arabia and Panama are the standout sides for this market. Both of these sides are priced up at 7/1 (Coral) to be the lowest scorers and it is easy to see why. Interestingly, hosts Russia are the lowest ranked side in the World Cup, but that is due to them not playing in qualifiers. When you look past them, Saudi Arabia are the other lowest ranked side (63rd), with Panama slightly above them in 49th.
Panama have certainly been drawn in a tougher group alongside Belgium, England and Tunisia and it is very conceivable that they will fail to score a goal in any of those games. Saudi Arabia have a slightly easier group and along with hosts Russia, they will play Egypt and Uruguay. I think both of these sides will struggle, but they both have a chance of scoring in the games against Tunisia and Egypt, respectively.
If you fancy Iran to follow up their lowest scoring award from 2014 with another one this summer, then they are available at odds of 10/1. I think there is great value to be had on betting in Iran, especially when you consider that they have been drawn alongside Spain, Portugal and Morocco. I can’t see Iran getting close to scoring against either Spain or Portugal and Morocco should also have too much quality for them after coming through a tough qualifying group containing Ivory Coast, Gabon and Mali.
When you look at the odds on offer and the teams that these sides have been drawn against, I think a bet on Iran at 10/1 represents a great value bet. They scored just a single goal at the last World Cup and I can’t see them doing any better than that next month.
