With Big Sam on his bike, Everton are looking for a new man to revolutionise the club
Sam Allardyce was added to the ever growing list of managerial casualties this season and despite bringing some stability to Goodison Park after Ronald Koeman’s bizarre reign, he never truly won over the Toffees’ faithful and ultimately paid the price. Everton invested heavily in the last 2 transfer windows with the likes of Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Theo Walcott and Cenk Tosun all arriving for hefty sums and their fans are looking for something to shout about having not won a trophy for 23 years. So here are the candidates to replace Allardyce at Goodison Park:
Every cloud has a Silva lining?
Marco Silva looked primed and ready to replace Ronald Koeman at the back end of 2017 and the then Watford manager seemed to tick all the boxes. An agreement couldn’t be reached between the clubs and Silva stayed put. Watford’s form dwindled – to the point that by mid-January – Silva had been sacked at Vicarage Road and Allardyce looked to be reviving Everton’s fortunes. As it happened, the Allardyce revolution was short-lived and it appears that Everton are prepared to give Silva his opportunity on the blue half of Merseyside. Marco Silva is the heavy favourite at 4/9 with Bet Victor to be the next Everton manager.
Emotional Returns
David Moyes was synonymous with Everton for a decade before Manchester United came calling and although it didn’t work out at Old Trafford, he is still very highly thought of at Goodison Park. Having just been sacked by West Ham, Moyes is back on the market and could be a good fit at 6/1 with Ladbrokes. Former club captain Mikel Arteta has been heavily linked with the vacancy at Arsenal in recent weeks but the Spaniard would be very well received on Merseyside – should he want to cut his managerial teeth there. It looks unlikely but Arteta is currently a 16/1 shot with Bet Bright to be the next man in charge of the Toffees.
Premier League Experience
The Everton board look to have a real challenge on their hands in terms of detailing their preferred manager type. The likes of Roberto Martinez and Ronald Koeman were calculated risks that didn’t really work out for the club, whilst Sam Allardyce’s appointment was pragmatic but not sustainable. Could Louis van Gaal provide the combination of experience and flair the Toffees fans crave? The Dutchman is out of work and looks a realistic candidate at 8/1 with Coral. Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has had another great season at Newcastle but his strained relationship with the board could be too much. Benitez is 22/1 with 888 Sport to make a sensational move back to Merseyside. Another man looking for work, that could whet the appeitite for Evertonians, is Claudio Ranieri. The Italian is out of work having left Nantes this week and having won the league with Leicester two seasons ago – could get Everton fans dreaming big. Claudio Ranieri is a 25/1 outsider with 10 Bet for the Everton job currently.
