Top scorer Premier League 2022/23: Haaland and Kane continue to score
Mohamed Salah and Heung-min Son shared the top scorer title in the Premier League last season. The Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur strikers both managed to score 23 times. With the arrival of Erling Braut Haaland (Manchester City) and Darwin Núnez (Liverpool), the competition for the top scorer title only seems to have increased. Who will be the Premier League’s top scorer in 2022/23?

Erling Braut Haaland was once again the goldcrest at Manchester City on Saturday. The striker from Norway was brought into the lines by coach Josep Guardiola in the second half to secure victory against Fulham. At 1-1, Haaland first scored from an offside position, but shortly before time he fired in the 2-1 from the penalty spot. At Fulham, Aleksandar Mitrovic remained dry.
However, it was not enough for Haaland to extend his margin over Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane. The England international, in fact, was a striker in his side’s lost (1-2) home game against Liverpool on Sunday. In that game, Mohamed Salah scored two goals on behalf of the visitors. The Egyptian has started the way up. At Newcastle United, Miguel Almiŕon scored a goal in the 1-4 win away at Southampton. His season total now stands at eight.

The favourites for the top scorer title
Mohamed Salah managed to become Premier League top scorer (shared) for the third time last season. In doing so, the Liverpool striker equalled Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane. Both players are keen to take their fourth title and leave the competition behind. The top scorer will receive a golden shoe at the end of the season as a prize for his special achievement.
Some things are also traditionally expected of Cristiano Ronaldo this season. The Manchester United striker finished third on the list last season, but the question is whether he will feature much in Erik ten Hag’s plans this season. At Manchester City, they logically expect a lot from Erling Braut Haaland. At Borussia Dortmund, the Norwegian proved to have a nose for goal. In 67 Bundesliga games, Haaland managed to score no less than 62 times. Whether the striker can continue these impressive statistics in England for a long period of time remains to be seen.
Darwin Núnez can also be seen as a candidate. The Liverpool striker came over from Benfica for a whopping €75 million. The striker from Uruguay scored 26 times in just 28 league games last season. In addition, Núnez was partly responsible for Ajax’s elimination in the Champions League. In Amsterdam, Núnez scored the only goal and thus eliminated Ajax.
The Premier League also has many outsiders for the top scorer title. It cannot be ruled out that Raheem Sterling (Chelsea), Jamie Vardy (Leicester City) or Gabriel Jesus (Arsenal) will be up for grabs.

Who won the top scorer title in the Premier League in the past?
The record for most goals in a season is held by Alan Shearer (Blackburn Rovers, 1994/95) and Andy Cole (Newcastle United, 1993/94). The strikers scored 34 times. Shearer did so in 42 games and Cole in 40.
Salah came close to that record in 2017/18. The Liverpool striker scored 32 times in 36 games. The highest number of this century. Later, Salah would grab the top scorer title twice more.
In total, only four players have become top scorer in the Premier League more than twice. Besides Salah and Kane, Shearer and Henry are also in this illustrious list. Shearer won the Golden Shoe for top scorer in the Premier League three times during his career. Thierry Henry is the record holder. The Frenchman managed to crown himself top scorer of the Premier League four times.
Who is the Premier League’s all-time top scorer?
Alan Shearer is the Premier League’s all-time top scorer. The Englishman ended his career in 2006 and reached a whopping 260 goals in the Premier League.
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney is the only player to come close to Shearer. Rooney scored 208 times in the Premier League, leaving behind Andy Cole (187), Sergio Agüero (184), Harry Kane (183), Frank Lampard (177) and Thierry Henry (175).
Kane is the only active footballer in this list. The 29-year-old striker is only 77 goals away from the record and does not seem to have any plans to stop playing football for the time being. Kane is still under contract with Tottenham Hotspur until mid-2024.
