Day one of the US Open means there are plenty of bets to choose from as we look for another set of Lucky 15 selections while there is some football worth betting on too as the UK enjoys its late summer Bank Holiday with some sports action. A Lucky 15 combines four separate bets into one four-fold accumulator, four trebles, six doubles and four singles, maximising your returns if two or more bets win.
Here are today’s tips – remember you can make these safer or riskier as you see fit.
- Tennis: John Isner to beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert 3-0 at around 4/5
- Tennis: Denis Shapovalov to beat Daniil Medvedev at around 4/5
- Tennis: Gilles Muller to beat Bernard Tomic 3-0 at 6/5
- Football: AFC Fylde to beat Barrow at around 6/5
John Isner to beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert 3-0
We picked Isner to win Winston-Salem last week, but an early exit will not have done his US Open chances too much harm. Last year he opened with a five-set win over Frances Tiafoe but should have things much easier against doubles specialist Herbert. Isner won in straight sets the last time they met, at the French Open in 2014, and on his favoured hard courts, in front of his home crowd, I do not see him dropping a set tonight.
Denis Shapovalov to beat Daniil Medvedev
Shapovalov is the narrow favourite for this one, and we think that is about right. He made a great run to the semis in Montreal and before that was in excellent form at Challenger level. He had to qualify for the US Open and did so well enough. That extra time on the court already could work in his favour, and I tip him to beat his Russian opponent today. Add some risk by backing him to win in four sets.
Gilles Muller to beat Bernard Tomic 3-0
Muller is playing the best tennis of his career to date. He also tends to excel on hard courts. He comes up against Tomic, whose ranking has plummeted and who seems completely uninterested and lacking motivation every time he goes on court. Muller leads the head to head 3-1, and this is unlikely to be the place Tomic gets himself back on track. A swift exit is predicted at the hands of the Luxembourger.
AFC Fylde to beat Barrow
We like the look of the odds-against for Fylde to beat Barrow in this National League encounter this evening. It took Fylde a little while to get going, but by all accounts, they looked good and comfortably beat Hartlepool 2-0 at the weekend. A return to home surroundings should give them a boost, and they can kick on from that victory against a Barrow side that is yet to win away from home this season. Fylde have also never lost this fixture before. Make it safer by going for the double result if you want as neither side is free-scoring.
