The Edinburgh Gin Scottish Sprint Handicap 2018 Main Contenders
El Astronaute
It’s no surprise that John Quinn’s five-year-old has been installed as ante-post favourite for this big prize as he’s been in terrific form so far this season with one win and three places from four runs. However, his mark is going up all the time and he’s rated much higher than the last four winners. He’s also flopped on both previous starts at the track, including in this race last year when he was on a much lower-mark.
Move In Time
This former group-class sprinter finished stone-last in the 2017 renewal but took advantage of his plummeting rating to get his head in front last time. That was only in a class 4 race though. However, that was also only his fourth run for his new trainer Paul Midgely who won last year’s renewal with another formerly high-class older horse whose mark had fallen significantly.
Major Jumbo
An in-form four-year-old whose form ties in closely with that of El Astronaute and Move In Time. However, his mark has been going up this season and he’s rated much higher than recent winners.
Line Of Reason
Not getting any younger at the age of eight but is now a few pounds lower than when winning last year’s renewal. Looks sure to have been plotted back to this race with such a big prize on offer and Joe Fanning is back in the saddle for the big occasion after recording one win and one second place from three rides on him.
Orion’s Bow
Well-handicapped horse as he’s now considerably lower than for his last win. He did run poorly last time but he was only ¾ of a length behind El Astronaute when they were second and third at Pontefract earlier in the season. However, as El Astronaute has maintained his form since, Orion’s Bow is now considerably better off.
The Edinburgh Gin Scottish Sprint Handicap Summary 2018
The in-form horses are at the head of the market but there are several well-handicapped horses lurking a big deeper in the market. Orion’s Bow will surely be found a winning opportunity soon, whilst Move In Time could win again now he’s rediscovered the winning habit, However, with course and distance form in the bag, Line Of Reason may well win back-to-back renewals.
