The women’s draw progresses to Wednesday with the weather ruining the schedule later on Tuesday but the preceding play on Monday and Tuesday threw up plenty of shock results. Last year’s champion Angelique Kerber bombed out in round 1 to Naomi Osaka whilst Johanna Konta (many people’s pick for a good run in New York) went out in 3 sets to Aleksandra Krunic.
Women’s First & Second Round
Not to mention Maria Sharapova dispatching the number 2 seed Simona Halep in one of the classic opening round matches. So with a backlog of fixtures and many big names in action here’s our pick of the action on Wednesday:
Petra Kvitova vs Alize Cornet
The returning Petra Kvitova will be looking to build upon her opening round win against Alize Cornet who impressed in dispatching Heather Watson in round 1. Kvitova looked to have a tough draw against Jelena Jankovic on Monday but came through in only her 8th hard court match this year. Cornet is now ranked at 41 in the world and is one of the most dangerous players on the WTA tour on her day.
Head to Head
Kvitova leads the head to head 1:0 – with their only previous meeting coming at this stage of the US Open 5 years ago. Kvitova is the comfortable 2/5 favourite with Sky Bet here whilst Cornet looks good value at 2/1 with Bet Victor.
Top Bet
Kvitova is still feeling her way back into fitness and form after injury – we fancy Cornet to come through here at 2/1.
Sloane Stephens vs Dominika Cibulkova
Another mouth-watering tie in round 2 as home favourite Stephens takes on last week’s new Haven finalist Dominika Cibulkova. Stephens has returned to form with aplomb since her foot injury ruled her out of most of last season and the first half of 2017 and she is back and firing. Cibulkova’s hard court form had been indifferent but her showing last week and her gritty round 1 triumph over Cepelova on Monday suggest she’s at her best here in New York.
Head to Head
Stephens is 2:1 to the good in the head to head with all of their previous meetings coming on the hard courts. Despite her inferior ranking Stephens is the 8/11 favourite with Paddy Power whilst Cilbulkova will fancy her chances at 6/5 with Sky Bet.
Top Bet
There really shouldn’t be too much between these 2 so backing the match to go to 3 sets looks a good move at 5/4 with Betway.
Caroline Wozniacki vs Ekaterina Makarova
The number 5 seed Wozniacki is in great form in 2017 without getting over the finishing line at any event as yet this season. She looks well placed to open her Grand Slam account here in New York but she looks to have a tough round 2 opponent in the experienced Ekaterina Makarova.
Head to Head
This will be the 8th meeting between these two players with Wozniacki currently standing unbeaten with a 7:0 record. She is the heavy favourite to continue that run at 1/3 with Sky Bet whilst Makarova is 5/2 for her first win over the Dane with Betfair..
Top Bet
Wozniacki’s form has been scintillating of late and her record over Makarova will instil her with plenty of confidence to progress – backing the match to contain under 19.5 games looks good value at 6/5 with Ladbrokes.
