Temple Stakes 2018 Main Contenders

Battaash

Sets an extremely high-standard on the best of last season’s form and there’s every chance this top-class sprinter could be even better as a four-year-old. However, he seemed best with a bit of cut in the ground last season and has the burden of 9-9 on his back after his win in the 2017 Prix d’Labbaye. He must also concede between 5lb and 16lb to all his rivals but has the potential to rate even higher.

Kachy

Easy winner of a conditions race at Chester last time but his best-form is at six furlongs, such as when second in a Commonwealth Cup and when second in the All-Weather Sprint Final. Likeable sort who is in form but probably lacks the raw speed to live with Battaash if the favourite is on his game.

Muthmir

Relishes fast ground but the eight-year-old is long past his best judged on recent efforts. He was also well-beaten in the 2016 renewal of this race and the favourite presents an even stronger test than that race.

Dreamfield

Completed a hat-trick with an all the way win in a six-furlongs handicap last time, which suggested he was worth a crack at five furlongs. However, he has a mountain to climb on ratings even if he is progressing quickly and could yet make up into a group-class sprinter.

Havana Grey

Group 2 winning two-year-old who was well-fancied on his seasonal debut but bombed out. However, he gets plenty of weight here off the favourite which theoretically gives him an excellent chance. However, he didn’t look to have the pace to cope with the favourite last time.

Total Cover

Veteran who simply loves his racing and he’s a multiple course and distance winner who thrives on fast ground. However, he couldn’t keep tabs on Bataash last season at Goodwood, though he has an 8lb pull for a beating of just over 3-lengths.

Mabs Cross

The ratings suggested he had no right to win the race he did last time at Newmarket, but his turn of foot is so potent he could yet go to the top as a sprinter. His trainer also trained the brilliant Meccas Angel, so he knows a good sprinter when they have one. It could be a fascinating contest with Bataash burning off in front and him coming form behind. Could be worth a bet in running if you think the front-runners go off to fast.

Temple Stakes 2018 Summary

There are plenty of exposed types in this race who could easily go close in receipt of weight from the favourite, but Battaash sets a very high standard for them to aim at. One horse that could yet take a big step forward is Mabs Cross who could relish having a fast pace to chase down. However, he still looks likely to come up short against Battaash who could be one of the best sprinters seen for many a year.
