Spain U21 vs France U21 Game Preview
Spain’s place in the semi-finals was under a big question before the Round 3 of the group stage, but they dismantled Poland and deservedly secured the top spot ahead of the hosts Italy. France, on the other hand, needed just a point in the game with Romania and they finished the group phase in the second place.
Spain U21 Team News and Latest Form
Spain responded to a 3-1 defeat to Italy in their opening European Championship game with a late, 2-1 victory over Belgium before they destroyed Poland in the final group match, 5-0. Pablo Fornals made his first start and scored the opener (his second goal at the tournament) with Mikel Oyarzabal, Fabián Ruiz, Dani Ceballos, and substitute Borja Mayoral were also on the score sheet.
It will be surprising if head coach Luis de la Fuente makes a bunch of changes against France. Marc Roca made his first start against Poland and displayed an excellent performance while all six players in midfield and attack contributed with goals and assists.
Spain had 69% possession against Poland with even 33 shots in opposite to just four from the Poles, and considering how strong their midfield is, we expect to see the Spaniards controlling the middle of the park in this one as well.
France U21 Team News and Latest Form
France secured two narrow wins in the first two matches at the European Under-21 Championship as they beat England and Croatia. Few risks were taken against Romania in the final game of the group phase with a draw enough for both teams to progress to the semis. Sylvain Ripoll’s men came away with a scoreless draw that saw France advance as the best second-placed team.
Winger Jonathan Bamba picked up an injury against England and will miss the rest of the tournament, so fellow wingers Jonathan Ikone and Marcus Thuram will likely get a start in this game. Lyon star Moussa Dembélé will return to the starting line-up in place of Jean-Philippe Mateta while right-back Colin Dagba is likely to beat Kelvin Amian for the place in the starting eleven. Central defenders and RB Leipzig teammates, Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konaté, played every minute of the tournament and will need to perform at their best against tricky Spaniards.
Spain U21 vs France U21 Head to Head
France and Spain have faced on six occasions, and France currently leads 2-1 with three draws. The previous clash at Stade Michel-d’Ornano in November 2018 ended 1-1 when Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty was cancelled out by Jean-Philippe Mateta’s late goal.
Spain U21 vs France U21 Betting Tip
Spain are favourites at 1/1 odds, but unlike France who rested some of their key players in a draw with Romania, La Furia Roja had to use theirs against Poland, and Les Bleuets could be fresher late in the game. France conceded only one goal at this tournament, and it’s evident that Upamecano and Konate know each other very well. However, it’s going to be extremely hard to keep Spain away from the goal, and although I cannot separate these teams and will not go with a bet on full-time, I am going with both teams to score at 7/10 with bet365. Both sides scored in each of the previous two H2H tilts.
