Senegal vs Algeria Game Preview
Both Senegal and Algeria recorded identical 2-0 wins in the opening round of the Africa Cup of Nations, and this clash will decide who will finish at the top of Group C. The Lions of Teranga are the slight favourites in this one and considering we have some top players on each side; it’s going to be an exciting encounter.
Senegal Team News and Latest Form
The highest-ranked CAF team, Senegal (FIFA rank: #22) dispatched Tanzania 2-0 in a routine victory that saw them win both halves. A 2-0 win is one that Senegal have become accustomed to in this competition, with each of their last three group stage victories coming via that scoreline.
Although Senegal head coach Allou Cissé is winless in two prior encounters with Algeria (D1, L1), they are unbeaten in eight matches in all competitions (W7, D1) with six of those seven victories accompanied by a clean sheet.
Despite not scoring once for Everton in the 2018/19 Premier League season, Senegal’s Idrissa Gueye has a goal and an assist from his last two international starts. Five of Senegal’s last six matches have produced under 2.5 total goals.
Algeria Team News and Latest Form
Meanwhile, Algeria (#68) also won 2-0 in their opening Africa Cup of Nations group game, in turn also registering a HT/FT success. In turn, they are now unbeaten in their last seven outings (W5, D2), although three of their previous five matches saw both teams find the net.
Algeria have been drawn in the same group as Senegal in each of the last two editions of this tournament. They avoided defeat in both games, with Algeria inflicting Senegal’s recent AFCON group stage defeat.
Premier League star Riyad Mahrez has scored three goals in his last four AFCON group stage appearances for Algeria, with two coming before half-time. Algeria have conceded an equaliser on two of the previous five occasions they have taken the lead. Each of Algeria’s last two games has produced over 1.5 first-half goals. Six of Algeria’s last eight AFCON group games have seen both teams score.
Senegal vs Algeria Head to Head
Senegal and Algeria have met on nine occasions so far, and Algeria currently leads in all-time H2H duels with four victories while Senegal recorded three wins. The previous H2H meeting in 2017 ended 2-2; Islam Slimani bagged a brace while Pape Diop and Moussa Saw scored for the Lions of Teranga. Senegal are winless in each of the last four H2Hs in all competitions (D1, L3).
Senegal vs Algeria Betting Tip
Algeria failed to find the back of the net in just two of the previous nine H2H encounters, and that is the same case with Senegal. Both teams scored in five of those nine meetings including two of three at the Africa Cup of Nations and considering firepower on each side; I am backing both teams to score in this one as well. Sadio Mané, M’Baye Niang, and Keita Baldé on one, and Islam Slimani, Riyad Mahrez, and Sofiane Feghouli on the other side certainly can produce at least one goal apiece. The 1/1 odds on BTTS with 22Bet are rather attractive, and if you are looking to double your stake on AFCON match, this is your pick.
