Real Madrid
Spanish league and Champions League champions Real Madrid have had a poor pre-season, without a win in normal time from four matches.
Their only victory came via a penalty shoot-out last week against an MLS All-Stars team, following a 1-1 draw.
It’s not form which gives us confidence in them, and the players will know they need to improve as the new domestic season fast approaches.
This is Real Madrid’s sixth Super Cup appearance, with three victories from the previous five. They won last year by beating Sevilla After Extra Time, and beat the same opponents to lift the trophy in 2014. Their previous victory was in 2002, when they beat Feyenoord 3-1.
Manchester United
Europa League champions Manchester United have had a fantastic build up to the new season, winning six of seven pre-season matches.
Five of those victories came in normal time, while the other was a penalty shoot-out win over Real Madrid. Their sole defeat was a narrow 1-0 loss to Barcelona.
Those performances will help build confidence as Jose Mourinho prepares his team for a domestic title challenge and an attempt at conquering Europe.
This is United’s fourth Super Cup appearance, although their only victory came back in 1991 when they beat Red Star Belgrade 1-0 at their home ground of Old Trafford. Their two defeats came in 1999, 1-0 to Lazio, and in 2008 when they were defeated 2-1 by Zenit Saint Petersburg.
Head to Head
Since 1957, these sides have met in ten competitive matches.
Real Madrid have the most wins, with four. Manchester United have won two, and four have finished level.
United haven’t won a competitive match between the two since 2003, when they picked up a 4-3 second-leg victory in a Champions League tie. However, they still lost the tie 6-5 on aggregate.
Real also won the most recent Champions League meeting on aggregate, with a 2-1 second leg victory following a 1-1 draw in the first-leg.
The most recent meeting came in the International Champions Cup last month, when United won on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Betting Odds and Predictions
Despite Real Madrid having a poor pre-season, and losing on penalties to Manchester United just last month, the Spanish champions are favourites to win this match.
Ladbrokes have them priced at 1011, with the English side at odds of 14/5. The draw looks a fantastic bet at odds of 11/4.
Three of the last four Super Cup matches have gone to Extra Time so it would be foolish to ignore the possibility of a draw after 90 minutes in this match.
For that reason, we would suggest punters using the ‘Draw no Bet’ or ‘Double Chance’ markets here.
In the ‘Draw no Bet’ market, Real Madrid are priced at 2/5 and Manchester United are at odds of 7/4. These are obviously lower odds than in the match result market but punters will get their stake back if the match finishes level.
In the ‘Double Chance’ market, Real or Draw is 2/7 and United or Draw is priced at 10/11. Real or United to win is 2/7 but doesn’t cover punters in the event of a draw.
Both teams have scored in eight of the ten competitive matches between these sides, and also in the most recent International Champions Cup meeting. Therefore, Both Teams to Score looks to be a fantastic bet at odds of 4/6.
The last meeting, last month, ended 1-1. If you think this match will end with a similar result, Both Teams to Score and a Draw in this match is at odds of 7/2.
