Phoenix Suns vs Los Angeles Lakers: Current situation
The Phoenix Suns are desperate to get something going as they continue life without their best player Kevin Durant. The last 10 days or so have been a disaster for the Suns who have fallen all the way from the top seed in the West to a play-in position thanks to a 5-game losing streak. The team has struggled heavily scoring the basketball in recent games, they went under 100 points in 2 of their last 4 outings.
After winning their first 7 home games, the Lakers are now on a mini 2-game slump after back-to-back losses to the Orlando Magic and Denver Nuggets. The loss against Denver hurt in particular as that team has now beaten LA in 13 of the last 14 meetings if we include the postseason. Unlike the Suns though, the Lakers don’t have any significant injuries at this time so it’s understandable that the oddsmakers see them as slight favorites for Tuesday’s game.

Both Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal practiced over the weekend which is a good indicator that they might be available in time for this game. Phoenix is scoring more than 5 points less without KD in the line-up, they will not be competitive against a talented Lakers team without their superstar here. In their most recent loss against the Knicks they did put up 122 points, however that was more due to the Knicks playing a fast tempo and not caring too much about their defense.

Anthony Davis played one of his worst games of the season in the Lakers’ 127-102 loss to Denver. The Brow scored just 14 points on 6-for-19 shooting, but the good news is the Suns don’t have a player similar to Nikola Jokic so he should be able to bounce back here. LeBron James also chipped in 18 in the loss, the last time he played in Phoenix he scored just 11 points so it’ll be interesting to see how he does here. The Lakers head into this one having covered the spread just once in 6 games.

Both teams are currently in midst of losing streaks, so the sense of urgency will be high among both rosters. The outcome of this game will be determined by whether or not Kevin Durant takes the floor for Phoenix. He has not played in almost 2 weeks, so there could be some question marks surrounding his fitness levels. With him on the floor the Suns offensive rating goes up by more than 5 points per 100 possessions, he’s dropped 30 points in both meetings against the Lakers this season. LA’s defense has been poor to say the least in their last 2 games, the Nuggets just destroyed them from three-point land by knocking down 16 threes on 50% efficiency. Let’s also not forget that the Lakers have been far from impressive on the road this season, winning only 3 of 7 games played. This is a must win situation for the Suns if they plan on advancing to the next round of the Emirates NBA Cup.
