Middlesbrough vs Aston Villa | Prediction, Betting Tips & Odds

Match Preview

Middlesbrough are looking to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, whilst Steve Bruce and his Aston Villa side are aiming to get back up to where they feel they belong. These sides finished in 5th and 4th, respectively, this season and both will fancy their chances of achieving promotion through the Playoffs this month. Promotion back to the Premier League is said to be worth almost £200m and both of these clubs and their fans believe that is where they belong.

Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough finished the season in dramatic fashion as a 97th-minute goal from Patrick Bamford sealed a 2-2 draw against Ipswich Town. That result means that Middlesbrough finished the season unbeaten in their last four matches and Tony Pulis will be confident that his side can cause Aston Villa problems in this one. Middlesbrough have struggled at home this season, losing six times at The Riverside Stadium; the joint worst home record of any side in the top six, along with Derby County.

To go along with this, they have the lowest goal return of any side in this season’s Playoffs. Adama Traore and Patrick Bamford have been in superb form since Pulis joined the club and the manager will be looking to those two players to fire his Middlesbrough side to victory on Saturday.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa went down to a 1-0 defeat to Millwall on the final day of the season; a result which ended a run of five games unbeaten for Steve Bruce’s side. Bruce took the opportunity to rest a number of key players in the match though, as John Terry, Jack Grealish and Jack Grabban all sat out the defeat to Millwall in order to be fresh for Saturday’s game. Aston Villa’s strength is their defence, with goalkeeper Sam Johnstone having kept 20 clean sheets in 45 appearances this season and with former Chelsea and England captain, John Terry, in front of him, The Villains backline have been hard to breach this season.

Middlesbrough vs Aston Villa Talking Points

  1. Middlesbrough have never achieved promotion through the Playoff system as it is now.
  2. Likewise, Aston Villa have never competed in the Playoffs before.
  3. Both teams star players; Adama Traore and Albert Adomah will be facing off against their former clubs.

Middlesbrough vs Aston Villa Prediction

Both of these sides will fancy their chances of progressing in this tie and both sides have players who can hurt the other. I’m backing a draw in this one, but I do fancy that Aston Villa will do enough over the two legs to advance to the final. Aston Villa don’t concede many goals and if they can keep Adama Traore quiet in these two games, then they should have enough attacking quality to advance. Middlesbrough have struggled at home all season long, but Pulis will be hoping that The Riverside will be rocking on Saturday as he seeks to defy his critics and take another team up to the Premier League.

Middlesbrough vs Aston Villa Betting Tip:

Middlesbrough start this game as favourites at odds of 5/4, whilst an away win for Aston Villa is priced up at 23/10, with the draw available at 19/10. I’m backing the draw in this game, but I fancy that both teams will score, so the 18/5 available on Draw & BTTS looks like a really good bet to me. Even the 11/10 on BTTS looks good value too and despite the fact that Aston Villa have one of the best defensive records in the league, Traore and Bamford come into this game in fine form. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous then the 5/1 on a correct score of 1-1 could well be worth a punt!
