Los Angeles Lakers vs Memphis Grizzlies: Current situation
The Lakers have fallen into a slump and there seems to be no way out of it, at least for now. They’ve now dropped 4 of their last 5 games, the lone win came at home against a not very good Portland Trail Blazers team. Head coach JJ Redick is seeking answers, but the more we look at the Lakers we realize this is a flawed roster and something needs changing. Look for LA to be very active prior to the trade deadline.
At 18-8 the Grizzlies have no such things to worry about. They’ve overtaken the Houston Rockets with their latest 4 game win streak, even the OKC Thunder aren’t out of reach with a 2 game lead atop of the Western Conference. The combination of Ja Morant, Jarren Jackson Jr. and the rest of the young core is proving to be the real deal, if the Grizzlies can avoid last year’s injury scenario they could very well be a threat in the Western Conference.

Anthony Davis, Austin Reaves and Max Christie were the only 3 players that contributed in the Lakers’ latest loss at Minnesota. The team was absolutely dreadful shooting the ball, they connected on just 33 of 86 shots total, while also going 10-for-35 from three and 11-for-17 from the charity stripe. Don’t be surprised if JJ Redick tries to mix things up here and we see a different starting five against Memphis.

All five starters scored in double figures for Memphis on Friday as they crushed the Brooklyn Nets 135-119. Ja Morant had 28 points and 10 assists, he is flying under the radar when it comes to the MVP award this year, despite overachieveing and having his team 2nd in the West. It’s also worth noting that Memphis had 33 assists as a team in that win, it feels like nobody can stop this team on the offensive end at the moment.

LeBron James is still questionable to play here for LA, he has missed the last two games and the team has really struggled on the offensive end without him. In Friday’s loss at Minnesota the Lakers finished with just 87 points, shooting 38% from the field and just 28% from downtown. Turnovers also killed LA, they committed 21 of them compared to just 13 by the Timberwolves. Meanwhile, Memphis just put up 135 points on the Brooklyn Nets, this team is firing on all cylinders and has scored at least 127 points in 5 of their last 6 games. They could even get Zach Edey back from injury, although bringing him back in the line-up might disrupt their chemistry a bit. LA did win the most recent meeting between the two teams, but that was back in mid-November when they still had a fresh LeBron James available. This time around we don’t believe they have enough on offense to keep up with the younger Grizzlies here. Memphis has been one of the most reliable bets this season with a 18-8 ATS record, while the Lakers are just 10-15 ATS. We are backing the road team to cover the spread in this one.
