Houston Rockets vs Dallas Mavericks: Current situation
For a team that was expected to be in the play-in tournament prior to the season starting by most analysts, the Houston Rockets can be proud of what they’ve accomplished so far. They are 3rd in the west after 32 games played and a 21-11 record. They also reached the NBA Cup semi-final which is a building block for one of the youngest rosters in the NBA. If there is one thing this team has to work on moving forward it is their home form. The 11th seeded Phoenix Suns have as many home wins as they do in the 3rd seed.
Dallas has done a terrific job in December, but towards the end of the year they’ve been hit hard by the injury bug. Luka Doncic suffered a calf injury which will keep him out for at least a month, which means he is unlikely going to be eligible for the regular season MVP award. The Mavs are also concerned that the team will fall off track without him, they’ve now lost 2 in a row and with some demanding games coming up the Mavericks will be tested in the coming weeks.

The inexperience of the Houston Rockets once again showed as they fell at home to the seasoned veterans of Miami 104-100 in their last game. Not only that, but towards the game the Rockets and Heat were involved in a scramble which could result in a few suspensions for Rockets players. However, that shouldn’t be an issue as head coach Ime Udoka has one of the deepest rosters in the NBA with 7 players averaging double-digit points per game.

Dallas too will have to dig deep into their roster to find adequate players in the coming weeks. Right now a total of 5 players are on the injury report, including Klay Thompson, Kyrie Irving, Luka Doncic, Dereck Lively II and Naji Marshall. The only thing working for the Mavs right now is the fact that they are 7-4 SU in games played when they are the underdog.

Character will come in play here as both the Mavericks and Rockets are currently on 2-game losing streaks. Houston has been very unlucky in their last 2 games, losing by just 1 and 4 points, some would say that’s to be expected for such a young team without a clear cut superstar that’s willing to carry the offense in clutch situations. The Mavericks are in luck because they have that player in Kyrie Irving, who is trying to hold the fort until Luka Doncic returns from injury. Irving did not play on Monday due to a shoulder injury in the 10-point loss to Sacramento, so he should be fresh for Wednesday’s game here. Houston is one of the healthier teams in the league right now, they’ll look to rely on their defense here, just like they did in the first meeting of the season which they won 108-102 back in November. Opponents are shooting just 34.8% from downtown against this team, so it could be a long night for the Mavs if they are once again without their top 2 players. With 3 losses in 4 games and Doncic being out, it’s hard to justify going with Dallas here. Houston has been stable at home with a 11-5 record so far, we will be picking them once again here.
