The Open Championship is upon us and it promises to be a fascinating week during the third major of the year. The course at Carnoustie has been bathed in sunshine for months and will play long and true, which will suit most but as always links golf provides many challenges that the world’s elite will have to be prepared for. Jordan Spieth will be defending his title in Scotland and it should be a real battle this week.

The Open Championship is the third major of the year and the only one played outside the US which adds to the uniqueness of the event.
Here’s a look at some of our favourites for The Open Championship:
Dustin Johnson – 11/1 (Ladbrokes) – The world number 1 is always a major player at the big events and will want to add the Open Championship to his collection. His big-hitting and accurate iron play are sure to help him on the links at Carnoustie and he looks refreshed after his month off since the US Open.
Justin Rose – 14/1 (888 Sport) – Few players in world golf are as consistent as Justin Rose, who returns to Carnoustie 20 years on from his heroic 4th place finish as an amateur. He has only won one major (2013 US Open) and a man with such a talismanic game should have more majors to his name.
Rickie Fowler – 18/1 (Betfair) – The enigmatic American continues to be a big player at all the major events without actually getting over the line. His 6th place finish at the Scottish Open last week indicated that he is in good form and how he would love to break his major duck here.
Rory McIlroy – 20/1 (Betway) – 2014 Open Champion Rory McIlroy has struggled for form and confidence this season but is always one to watch at any major event. The Northern Irishman is desperate to be dining at the top table in world golf once again and a win here could provide that for him.
Jon Rahm – 20/1 (Coral) – The young Spaniard has been in electrifying form on the European and PGA Tour all season and looks well set to sustain an attack on the elite of world golf for many years to come. He’s yet to win a major and possesses all the tools to be a good links golf player.
Jordan Spieth – 22/1 (188 Bet) – Defending champion Jordan Spieth has seen his career plateau somewhat throughout 2018 but he is more than capable of finding form on the big stage.
Tommy Fleetwood – 25/1 (10 Bet) – Young Englishman Tommy Fleetwood has emerged as one of the leading contenders for majors in recent months and could well announce himself at The Open this year.
Francesco Molinari – 28/1 (Coral) – The Italian can’t stop winning on the PGA Tour and looks to have overcome a real mental block in recent times and is a serious contender this week in Scotland.
Paul Casey – 40/1 (William Hill) – The experienced Englishman is yet to win a major but always seems to play well when the chips are down. More used to the lush green of America than the links terrain in Scotland but could pose a threat or too here.
Top Pick – Justin Rose – 14/1 (888 Sport)
Outside Pick – Tommy Fleetwood – 25/1 (10 Bet)
