Tournament Preview
With major season on the horizon, many of the biggest names on the PGA Tour converge on Ohio looking to secure precious ranking points and perhaps more importantly – confidence with the big events looming. The US Open is only two weeks away and it has been one of the most open years on the PGA Tour in recent memory so once again many players will fancy their chances this week.
Outright Betting – PGA Memorial Championships
The Memorial is an event steeped in tradition and once again tournament organisers have assembled an impressive field.
Here’s a look at some of our favourites for the Players Championship:
Dustin Johnson – 12/1 (Ladbrokes) – The world number two is always in contention and sometimes beats himself rather than lets others beat him. Despite a relatively inconsistent and unremarkable 2018, he has the game to trouble the course here and is potentially unstoppable if on form.
Justin Thomas – 14/1 (Betfred) – Another from the crop of impressive young Americans, Thomas has followed up his impressive 2017 season (culminating in a Grand Slam win at the PGA Championship) with a solid first half of 2018 and he currently finds himself ranked number 1 in the world, one to watch here.
Jason Day – 14/1 (Bet Victor) – Form can mean so much on a golf course and Jason Day picked up his first win of the season last month at the Wells Fargo Championship to return to the world’s top 10. The enigmatic Aussie has had his struggles in recent months but looks to be returning to form when it matters.
Justin Rose– 14/1 (Bet Bright) – The Olympic champion is always a contender in any event he plays in, highlighted by his win last week at Fort Worth. The Englishman is renowned for his incredible mental strength and he always seems to be in good nick around this time of the year.
Jordan Spieth – 16/1 (William Hill) – A figure of consistency in recent seasons, Jordan Spieth continues to belie his youthful years. The three time major winner has yet to win this season on tour but he is always in contention at the big events.
In a very open field at the Memorial, here are some of the best outside picks:
Rickie Fowler – 20/1 (Coral) – In danger of always being the bridesmaid, Fowler has finished in the top 3 at all of the majors without actually winning one. How he would love a trophy here before major season kicks in.
Tiger Woods – 22/1 (Bet Victor) – No golf tournament is complete without the name of Tiger Woods in the field. He will be pleased to be back at the Memorial – a tournament he has won a remarkable 5 times before and who would bet against him featuring prominently here.
Patrick Reed – 33/1 (Betway) – The current Masters Champion is enjoying a remarkable 2018 and appears to be fulfilling his potential. It’s a strong field here but Reed possess all of the credentials to feature heavily come Sunday.
