France vs South Korea Match Preview
France and South Korea go head-to-head in the opening match of the 2019 Women’s World Cup, with both nations being confident of qualifying for the knockout stage of the competition after being drawn in Group A alongside Norway and Nigeria. France go into the match as the favourites for victory following their impressive recent run, however with opponents South Korea having reached the Round of 16 in Canada four years ago, it could well be a close encounter. A large number of bets are expected to be placed on the match, so let’s take a closer look at the two teams, including their player availability and recent form, starting with hosts France.
France Team News & Form
France undoubtedly has one of the most talented playing squads in the entire tournament, with the likes of Eugénie Le Sommer, Élise Bussaglia and Captain Amandine Henry meaning that they have the firepower to overcome anyone on their day. Whilst there are certainly concerns when it comes to their goalkeeper Sara Bohuhaddi, who is known for her unreliability, there are very few weaknesses to speak of for Les Bleus. Having qualified for the Finals automatically as the host nation, France will be looking to earn their best ever World Cup finish, having placed fourth back in 2011.
France come into the tournament having beaten both Uruguay, Japan and Denmark in their warm-up encounters, scoring an impressive 13 goals in the process. In fact, Les Bleus have lost just one of their last five matches in all competitions, coming against reigning World Cup winners the United States back in February. A win against South Korea would set them well on their way to winning Group A.
South Korea Team News & Form
South Korea has long been among the standout teams in Asia, with their current roster meaning that they could well be a threat in France this summer. The Taegeuk Nangja have a hugely experienced squad to select from, including the likes of Cho so-hyun and goalkeeper Kim Jung-Mi. However, it is forward Jo So-yun who is undoubtedly the star of the show, with the attacker potentially bringing up her half century of goals at international level in France. The 28-year-old player has impressed in the English WSL since her arrival at Chelsea in 2014, with many of the French squad knowing all about her talents. South Korea made it through to the Finals after finishing third in their AFC qualifying group, before beating the Philippines 5-0 on aggregate. As a result, this will be their third World Cup appearance, having reached the Round of 16 four years ago.
South Korea defeated both Argentina and New Zealand during the FFA Cup of Nations at the start of the year, however they more recently struggled in a friendly double header against Iceland. As a result, the Asian nation come into their clash with France as something of an unknown quantity, with their inconsistency making them difficult to predict.
France vs South Korea Head to Head
France knockout South Korea out of the 2015 World Cup in the last meeting between the two nations, with a 3-0 success in Canada meaning that it was Les Bleus who advanced to the quarter finals. However, with the duo having not met since in either a competitive or friendly tie, perhaps little can be read into their head-to-head record.
