Foden, Greenwood & Phillips Receive First England Call-Ups
Ahead of England’s UEFA Nations League encounters against Denmark and Iceland in September, manager Gareth Southgate has named his squad, which features youngsters Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood, as well as Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips. The trio could all make their senior debuts in the competition, while Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson is also in line for his first appearance, having previously been called up to the squad.
Can England Go All the Way in the Nations League?
England are among the favourites to win the UEFA Nations League, having finished in third place last year, with bookies Bet365 and William Hill having both priced the Three Lions at odds of 11/2. While the absence from the squad of Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish was a surprise to many, Southgate certainly has no shortage of attacking options available to him, with Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho set to battle it out for starting births.

Phil Foden earned a call-up following an impressive end to the season with Manchester City, with his performance in the Champions League quarter final second leg against Real Madrid having been particularly impressive. Meanwhile, in the red half of Manchester, Mason Greenwood has become a regular starter for Manchester United, scoring 19 goals from the right-hand side.
Southgate Forced to Withdraw Maguire from Squad
Southgate was forced to withdraw Manchester United Captain Harry Maguire from the squad however, following news that the defender had been charged for his role in an incident in Mykonos, Greece. No replacement has been named as of yet, leaving England a bit thin on the ground in the back line, with no recognised left back having been named in the squad either.
The English midfield will have a youthful look to it too, with Southampton Captain James Ward-Prowse being the oldest at just 25. Childhood friends Declan Rice and Mason Mount could well start against Iceland, with Tottenham Hotspurs’ Harry Winks also being in contention.
A number of players in the squad are currently at the centre of potential transfer deals, with Manchester United still pushing to sign Sancho, while it is no secret that Chelsea are interested in acquiring the services of West Ham’s Rice. The duo are priced at odds of 4/6 and 8/13 respectively to make such moves, with their minds potentially being elsewhere at this stage.
