How England Qualified for Euro 2024

England qualified for Euro 2024 with ease. Six wins and two draws from their eight matches meant England topped Group C, ahead of Italy and Ukraine. The Three Lions conceded just four goals during their campaign, finding the back of the net 22 times.

Harry Kane scored eight goals during qualifying, a number only beaten by Kylian Mbappe, Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku. However, England’s post-qualification form hasn’t been as impressive. A 2-2 draw against Belgium was followed by a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Brazil.

England’s Euro 2024 Playing Squad

You only need to look at the talent in the England squad to work out why bookies have them down as favourites. Many players who led England to the final four years ago are still featured. Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane captains the team and is among the frontrunners for the top goalscorer award. Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Bakayo Saka have all enjoyed fine campaigns at club level.

It is defensively where England may struggle. John Stones, Luke Shaw, and Harry Maguire have all had injury problems this season. Any further issues would leave Southgate reliant on inexperienced replacements. Teams can now select a squad of 26 players, which should mean that Southgate includes Cole Palmer, Kobbie Mainoo and Jarrad Branthwaite.

Portugal 13%

Italy 7%

Netherlands 6%

Who Are England’s Biggest Threats at Euro 2024?

Most football supporters expect England to breeze through Group C and reach the knockout stages at Euro 2024. This is where they could come unstuck. Beaten by Switzerland at the Round of 16 stage four years ago, France is the only nation who can match England’s squad depth. The likes of Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Aurélien Tchouaméni are their stars. The 2x European champions are priced at 4/1.

Host nation Germany can never be written off. This is despite not having the star names as in years gone by. Florian Wirtz, Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala all come into the tournament in top form. Having been knocked out at the Group Stage at the 2022 World Cup, Die Mannschaft will hope to give their fans something to cheer about. Odds of 6/1 for Julian Nagelsmann’s men seem about right.

Group B is an interesting one. Italy, Spain and Croatia are joined by Albania. Portugal are the strong favourites to win Group F, in what could be Cristiano Ronaldo’s farewell to international football. A Euro 2024 winner from elsewhere would be a major shock.

England’s Past Performances at the European Championships

England has never won the European Championships. 2020 was the first time they have made it to the Final. They were beaten on penalties by Italy at Wembley Stadium, meaning that the Three Lions had to settle for the runner-up position. However, this was a massive step in the right direction for a nation whose previous best showing was reaching the semi-finals in 1996.

England were eliminated at the quarter-final stage in both 2004 and 2012. They failed to qualify altogether in 2008 under Steve McLaren. Then in 2016, Iceland shocked the football world by seeing off England in the Round of 16. The Three Lions certainly has some catching up to do. Spain, France, Germany and Italy have all won the competition multiple times. Euro 2024 England odds suggest that this could be their year.

England’s Route to the Final

Southgate and his coaching team will do everything they can to ensure England finished top of Group C. Should they do so, a Round of 16 tie against one of Austria, Romania. Turkey or George awaits. If everything goes as expected, this would be followed by clashes against Italy, France and Spain.

However, a runner-up finish in Group C would make things more difficult for England. They could come up against host nation Germany in the Round of 16. Spain, Netherlands and France would then be their likely path to glory.

England’s Euro 2024 Warm-Up Fixtures

Matches against Bosnia Herzegovina and Iceland have been organised to help England prepare for Euro 2024. Taking place on June 3rd and 7th, respectively. Southgate will name his final squad on May 21st. During the tournament, England will be based at a 5-star hotel in Blankenhain. The FA chose this base due to its central location and luxury facilities. Will this help England end its 60-year wait for silverware?

What the Experts Have to Say

What football experts say is always worth noting ahead of a major tournament. Many pundits and managers have backed England to win Euro 2024. Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has said that England’s past failures put them in a good position this summer. Former Three Lions manager Glenn Hoddle has also made England favourites. The former Tottenham Hotspur man said England must channel French arrogance and German mentality to be successful.
