England head into their penultimate World Cup 2018 qualification match on Thursday night as they play host to Slovenia. A win in the game for Gareth Southgate’s men will guarantee that the Three Lions head off to Russia next summer as it would seal the Group F win with one game to go. A draw would be enough if Slovakia fails to beat Scotland on the same night. England’s final game will be against Lithuania on October 8th.
So the Three Lions are almost over the line and the Wembley crowds will be hoping to see a more exciting game than the 0-0 draw that was played out between these two back in October last year in Ljubljana. It is just getting to the Finals next summer is all that really counts but England have won each of their four home games in qualifying so far.
Three of their four wins have been with a clean sheet as well, with Slovakia the only ones to get on the scoreboard at Wembley against them in the group, as they took a shock lead in England’s last home qualifier, which the Three Lions turned around and won 2-1. England are expected to win this and comfortably so, even with Slovenia still harbouring their own qualification hopes. They would pull to within in three points of England with a shock victory.
England have hosted Slovenia just twice before and won both of those games. There was 2-1 friendly win for them back in 2009 over Slovenia and then a 3-1 victory in November of 2014 in the 2016 European Championship qualifiers. Overall their head to head record against Slovenians is W4 D1 L0. This may be a low scoring affair as England rarely come up with enough creativity to hammer sides that set up in a defensive manner, but three points should head the way of the home side.
