Colombia vs. Paraguay Game Preview
Colombia secured a top spot in Group B after a late victory over Qatar and now they can field a weakened side in a clash with Paraguay, who are looking for three points in order to progress to the quarter-finals. Elsewhere, Argentina are expected to beat debutants Qatar, so Los Guaraníes cannot afford to lose this game as they could reach the knockout stage also with a point from this clash.
Colombia Team News and Latest Form
Topping the group, Colombia (W2, GD: 3:0) have despatched both Qatar and Argentina to nil and are on a four-game winning run including friendlies. Despite losing 2-1 in the last H2H meeting in World Cup 2018 qualifying, Colombia have won five of their last six matchups.
Losing just one pre-tournament friendly (W6, D1), Los Cafeteros haven’t conceded in four games – a good return for Carlos Queiroz (W5, L1) and a Colombia team which saw both teams score in 60.0% of ten games previous (in all competitions). However, it’s worth noting that Colombia have a sketchy competitive record since Copa America 2016 (including qualifiers) – whilst winning eight games since, they’ve drawn five matches and lost five (four by 2-1 AET).
Duván Zapata has scored in three straight international appearances and scored 28 goals in all competitions for Atalanta last season. Colombia have failed to score in just 7.14% of 14 previous games.
Paraguay Team News and Latest Form
Second place for good reason, Paraguay held Qatar and Argentina to score draws and are unbeaten in four games – a fitting motif for their all-time Copa America record (W22, D30, L21). Interestingly, Paraguay have lost 11 games by a one-goal margin since CA 2016 and have shipped four or more goals in five matches since (including friendlies).
However, winning just five competitive matches since the 2016 CA (L7), Los Guaraníes have it all to do to claim just their fifth H2H win since WC 2002 qualifying (D1, L9). But Paraguay will be highly-motivated here as anything but a win could see Argentina steal second place if they beat Qatar!
Oscar Cardozo scored a penalty in his last appearance whilst scoring an 89th-minute equaliser in the last H2H meeting. Both teams have scored in 66.67% of Paraguay’s last 12 matches.
Colombia vs. Paraguay Head to Head
Colombia and Paraguay have met on 37 occasions since 1947 and Paraguay have 17 victories while Colombia were better 16 times with four draws. However, Los Cafeteros are dominant in recent H2H clashes as they won five of the previous six meetings but Paraguay were on the winning side in the latest encounter. In 11 previous H2H meetings, ten matches have finished 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1, so don’t expect a goal glut in this one. The last six H2H meetings have seen 30 yellow cards in total (two dismissals).
Colombia vs. Paraguay Betting Tip
These rivals haven’t played a draw in the previous H2H 11 duels and one point could turn out to be insufficient for Paraguay to advance to the quarter-finals, so Los Guaraníes will have to try taking all three points. I cannot separate these teams at the moment and that’s why I am backing a draw at 23/10 with 22bet but in case you prefer playing accumulators, then a double chance on Paraguay at 9/20 is surely an option to consider.
