Spain U21 and Germany U21 will meet in the final of the 2017 UEFA European Under 21 Championship final. The match will be played on Friday 30th June in the Stadion Cracovia, Krakow in Poland.
Italy are the most successful nation in the history of the European Under 21 Championship, with five tournament victories. The Spanish have a chance to equal that record with a win in this match. Spain have won two of the last three European Under 21 tournaments and will be confident of making it three from four.
Germany U21’s have surprisingly won the tournament only once in their history and that victory came back in 2009. Mesut Ozil was among the goal scorers that day as Germany U21 put England to the sword.
Spain U21 Form
Albert Celades’ team have looked superb in this tournament and come into the final in excellent form.
Spain U21 topped Group B with maximum points from their three games. They started with an impressive 5-0 win over Macedonia and Marco Asensio scored a hattrick. Their second match was always going to be the toughest but Spain U21 saw off the challenge of Portugal to win the game 3-1.
With a place in the semi-final guaranteed, Celades changed his team completely for the match against Serbia but Spain U21 still won the match 1-0 to win the group. The semi-final proved no problem for the Spanish and they defeated Italy 3-1 thanks to a Saul Niguez hattrick.
Germany U21 Form
Germany U21’s were drawn into arguably the toughest group in the tournament but started very well. Good 2-0 and 3-0 victories over Czech Republic and Denmark respectively saw Germany U21 rise to the top of Group C.
With semi-final qualification almost secure, Germany U21 slipped up in their final group game, losing 1-0 to Italy. This result saw them drop to second in the group and qualify for the semi-final as the best runner-up.
A meeting with England in the semi-final was always going to be tough and despite taking the lead, Germany U21 were forced to come from behind in the second half to equalise and take the game to penalties. As is often the case when Germany meet England in a penalty shootout, it was the Germans who kept their cool to progress to the final.
Team News
Spain U21 are likely to remain unchanged from the players which started the match against Italy in the semi-final. Tournament top scorer Saul Niguez will operate in midfield. Germany U21 will also name a similar starting XI to the team which played against England, with no major changes to their system.
