Fourth-placed Bristol City look to make it four consecutive wins and possibly move up to second in the Championship table, but face a tough task as they travel to a Sheffield Wednesday side who are also chasing promotion to the Premier League.
Wednesday finished fourth last season and were tipped to have another promotion chasing campaign this term. But, things haven’t gone as well as they would have hoped. They went on a run of just one win from seven in the league until the end of last month, but have improved to pick up back to back victories over Millwall and Aston Villa in recent weeks. Currently in eleventh in the table, they sit just three points outside the top six. However, they have the joint lowest goals for of the top twelve despite failing to score in only 19% of their matches. At home, they have suffered just one defeat from eight. That loss came against local rivals Sheffield United in September. Recent League Form – WWDLLW.

Bristol City
Bristol City are unexpectedly in the top four and looking like genuine promotion contenders, having suffered fewer losses than any other side in the division. Just two defeats from their sixteen matches, only one of which was away, has helped put them in an extremely strong position. They come into this match off the back of three consecutive victories, and find themselves just five points off the top of the table. Perhaps they would be in an even better position had they not dropped points by drawing six matches. Their only away defeat came at Birmingham early in the season, with them currently on a run of seven unbeaten on the road. Recent League Form – WWWLDW.
Head to Head
These sides first met back in October 1906, but have only ever played each other twenty-seven times. Overall, Sheffield Wednesday hold a narrow advantage with eleven wins. Bristol City have won seven, and nine have finished level. There’s not much to separate them in recent years. In the last eleven meetings, both sides have won three apiece and there has been five draws. The most recent meeting, in January this year, ended in a 2-2 draw.
Betting Odds and Predictions
There’s not much to choose between these sides, based on statistics and head to head record, so it’s no surprise to see the betting odds quite close. Sheffield Wednesday are the favourites for the win, probably due to home advantage, and are priced at 23/20 with Ladbrokes. Bristol City are 23/10, and the draw is the same price as the visitors. With the teams being so evenly matched, we wouldn’t risk betting on a winner in the match result market. If we had to choose an outcome, it would be a draw but it wouldn’t be a confident selection.
We would much rather look at other markets as a way of making a profit and there are two which we are certain will give punters a return. Firstly is the Both Teams to Score market. Both sides have netted in the last three, and five of the last six, meetings and it’s highly likely they do again here. Both Teams to Score is priced at 8/11, which is a decent price for something we believe will happen. The other market likely to give a profit is the Over/Under number of goals. There have been at least three goals in the last three, and five of the last seven, meetings. At least two goals have been scored in nine of the last ten meetings. Over 2.5 Goals obviously provides more value, at odds of 10/11, but Over 1.5 Goals provides more chance of actually making a profit. The profit will be small, at odds of 2/7, but a profit’s a profit and that’s the aim of the game.
