Manchester City
Pep Guardiola has splashed the cash this summer, as he hopes to build his Manchester City side into serious title contenders in the Premier League this season.
Of the £200+ million spent, around £50m went on right-back Kyle Walker from Tottenham. The England international has already appeared for his new club and will be hoping for a victory over his old teammates just days after his move.
City started their pre-season with a 2-0 defeat to local rivals Manchester United in their ICC opener. It was a blow to preparations for the new season, but they bounced back in style. Just six days after that loss they secured a superb 4-1 victory over Spanish champions Real Madrid in Los Angeles.
Kevin De Bruyne and Yaya Toure controlled the play from midfield, linking up brilliantly to keep constant pressure on the Real defence. It was pressure that paid dividends and gave the team a confidence boosting and convincing victory.
They will hope to keep that form going as they take on a team who finished higher than them in the Premier League last season.
Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham have spent a total of zero pounds on new players in this transfer window, with their only deal of note being the sale of Walker. It shows that Mauricio Pochettino is either confident in the players at his disposal or unable to secure his targets.
That confidence in his players was enough to secure them second place in the Premier League last season, but it remains to be seen if it will be enough to go one better in 2017/18.
Pre-season has been a bit up and down so far. After a behind-closed-doors friendly victory over Leyton Orient, with a team mostly consisting of youngsters, Spurs flew out to the United States to take part in the ICC.
Their first match in the competition was against Paris Saint-Germain, and the English side came back from a goal down and then rallied late on to win the match 4-2.
They also rallied late in the second game, scoring in the 87th minute and again in injury time to level things up from 2-0 down. Those late goals looked to have earned them a draw but, a minute after the equaliser, Roma netted an extremely late winner.
After that narrow defeat, Tottenham will be keen to end their ICC campaign with a win which could see them move top of the USA section.
Head to Head
In total, since the first meeting in 1910, these sides have met 133 times. Manchester City have won 50, Tottenham have 52 victories, and there have been 31 draws.
Looking at the last ten meetings, since November 2012, we see that the teams are still pretty evenly matched. City have five wins, Spurs four, and one meeting has been a draw.
That draw was the most recent meeting, in January this year, when Tottenham fought back from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 draw.
City won four in a row between November 2013 and May 2015, but have lost three and drawn one since then.
Betting Odds and Predictions
These two teams are evenly matched and that’s reflected in the betting odds. Betway have Manchester City priced as narrow favourites, at 6/5, with Tottenham at 21/10. The draw is priced at 5/2.
Due to the closeness of the teams, it may pay to use the ‘Double Chance’ or ‘Draw no Bet’ market.
In the ‘Double Chance,’ City or a Draw is priced at 4/11, Spurs or Draw is 7/10, and City or Spurs is 2/7.
The ‘Draw no Bet’ market offers the chance to back City at odds of 4/7 or Tottenham at 5/4, with the security of receiving your stake back if the match finishes level.
Seven of the last ten meetings have seen both teams score. Also, both sides have scored in both of Spurs’ ICC games, and one of City’s. Therefore, we are confident enough to tip ‘Yes’ in the Both Teams to Score market at odds of 2/5.
Betway are offering a Double Chance paired with BTTS market. Backing BTTS and City or Draw is 19/20, BTTS and Spurs or Draw is 13/10, and BTTS and City or Spurs is 11/10.
Over 2.5 Goals, at odds of 1/2, also looks a fantastic bet in this match.
