Coventry took a tumble from League One last season after a really miserable season. They did at least start off life in the fourth tier on a positive note last weekend with a comfortable home win posted over Notts County. Grimsby were nothing more than a mid table side in last season’s campaign but like Coventry, they opened with a bang, putting three goals past Crawley out on the road. So this one could be a good, free-flowing and open game.

Grimsby are 8/5 favourites out on the road with Ladbrokes to take the win in this one, with Coventry back at around 7/4. These two have been apart in the league tier since back in the 2002/03 Division One season and it was Coventry who was on top from those meetings. So it’s been awhile since these two met in any competition and Blundell Park could see plenty of goals.
Grimsby Form
So the Mariners put up a very good 3-1 away win at Chesterfield last weekend to open the season with. That will have given them great confidence to get some early momentum going. Last season at Blundell Park they posted a W9 D6 L8 record for the season and they were unbeaten in their last three home games of last season (W2 D1). It is been a fair while then since they played hosts to the Sky Blues, so will they be able to drive home another win and make it six points from six this season?
Coventry Form
The Sky Blues were the second-lowest scorers in league One last season, but their three goal haul in a win over Notts County last weekend will have done them the world of good. It is always tricky to read relegated clubs starting a new season and at home in League One last season they only went W8 D7 L8, which is pretty average. It was their away form which was shocking as they lost seventeen of their 23 games played, winning just once. So that is a potentially huge red flag for them in this one.
Head to Head News
Nothing too much to read up on this one but Grimsby have won three of the last four meetings with the Sky Blues (L1). But as mentioned above, they haven’t met since early 2003. Overall in the head to head in all competitions throughout history, Coventry are 13-8 to the good with four draws against The Mariners. Coventry have lost just one of their last four visits to Blundell Park in a W2 D1 L1 record.
Top Betting Tips
Given what both produced last weekend there should be goals on the board and over 2.5 goals at 21/20 with bet365 is a good starting option. Coventry were pretty shocking away from home last season but they have won their last two at Blundell Park, albeit a long time ago. It’s so hard to read this game so perhaps the value at 5/2 on the draw in the match outright is the place to settle.
