This may well be the biggest fight of the year. It is GGG Gennady Golovkin taking on Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on Saturday night in Las Vegas. It has been a high profile year for boxing and this contest could be the real highlight of it all.
35-year-old Kazakh Golovkin holds an unbeaten career record from his 39 fights and he goes into this one off the back of 19 consecutive title fights. He has put himself on the line time and time again and has continued to come out on top. However, this year he went up against Daniel Jacobs and it looked as if he may have lost as Jacobs surprisingly took the champion the distance.
GGG was not at his destructive best in the bout but got the decision, and with Kell Brook, having come up two weight divisions to meet him and getting some good inside shots landed on him, vulnerabilities have been there for Golovkin. So is he past his best? This is going to be some fight and Canelo is a very smart, technical boxer. The footwork of the Mexican isn’t the greatest but in taking out Julio Cesar Chavez Jr this year, he showed that he can handle big guys easily as he dominated the fight.
Golovkin’s jab is his big weapon and so if Canelo can get inside of that and do his business then GGG is going to be under some pressure in this one. Will this be the fight in which we see the Kazakh fighter fall? Patience is a virtue and for Canelo waiting until now, with GGG getting towards the end of his career to face him, the Mexican may just have his day.
