Both of these finished in the bottom six of League Two last season so both will be hoping for much better campaigns this go around. This is one of those fixtures with such limited previous head to head form that it can make betting a little tricky on it. The two games between them last season in League Two were the first competitive games ever between them and it was the Welsh club Newport who came out on top. Both of them drew their respective opening games of the new season last weekend.

So neither produced much to cheer about last season in their league campaigns and both will be hoping to secure some much better form. This isn’t really a game which either of them will want to lose because for each of these there will be much tougher games down the line than what they are respectively facing in this duel at the Alexandra Stadium. Crewe are 7/5 to win this with Newport at 9/5 with bet365 so nothing really to split them.
Crewe Form
Crewe were at home for their season opener last weekend and they were held to a 2-2 draw against Mansfield despite taking the lead twice in the match, both times through Chris Porter. Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t hold either of the leads they had earned from more than ten minutes, which raises vulnerability questions about them. Crewe posted only an average W8 D7 L8 record on home soil last season but they went unbeaten in their last three there and with last week’s tie, that is a W2 D2 in their last four at home in the league. They did lose at home against Newport last season though.
Newport Form
The Exiles finished third from bottom last season in League Two and they suffered a lot of defeats out on the road. They went W6 D4 L13 away from home last season but maybe the 3-3 draw that they battled out at Stevenage last weekend will instil a bit of confidence in them. They were 3-1 down at one point in the second half of that game. Only two sides in last season’s League Two campaign scored fewer goals than Newport did and they had the joint-fourth worst defence.
Head to Head News
So limited head to head between them with just the two games played before. Both teams did score in both of those meetings last season and really there’s not much else to really look at other than the four points that Newport collected, with the win coming at Crewe.
Top Betting Tips
This will probably be a tight game then as both meetings last season between them were. Newport did well to scrap out a point at Stevenage last weekend and that should mean that they can avoid defeat in this one. The draw in the match outright at 5/2 with bet365 has appeal but if you wanted to push for Newport, then an 11/10 price at Paddy Power on a Newport Draw No bet offers some coverage at least.
