Two teams with vastly different styles meet at Turf Moor on New Year’s Day as Burnley host Liverpool. Burnley have one of the best defensive records in the league this season, but also have scored fewer goals than all but three teams, whilst Liverpool are the second highest scorers in the Premier League, but have also been shipping a large number of goals at the other end. It will be interesting to see which style wins out on Monday in what could be a full blooded clash.

Burnley
Burnley are without a win in their last four matches now after drawing 0-0 with Huddersfield Town last time out. Sean Dyche would happily take another draw from this game, I’m sure, and he will be setting his side up to frustrate Liverpool on Monday. Chris Wood is expected to miss this game, so Dyche will again be looking to Ashley Barnes for goals in this match.
Liverpool
Liverpool had to come from behind to beat Leicester City in their last game and Mohamed Salah was again the man for The Reds, with the Egyptian flyer scoring two more goals to take his tally to the season to 17 goals in the Premier League. Jurgen Klopp made a number of changes for that game and I’d fully expect him to make changes for this one too, with the likes of Simon Mignolet, Ragnar Klavan, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Dominic Solanke all pushing for starting berths. I’d expect the game to come too soon for £75m signing Virgil van Dijk, but Klopp may choose to include him amongst the substitutes.
Talking Points
- Burnley’s home matches this season have seen an average of just 1.3 goals scored per game.
- Liverpool’s away matches, by contrast, have averaged 4.7 goals per game with Liverpool scoring 27 times and conceding 20.
- There has been over 2.5 goals in a match, just once at Turf Moor this season and just once in the last ten games here have both teams found the net.
Prediction
Liverpool have been in excellent form recently and Jurgen Klopp’s side are now unbeaten in their last 15 matches in all competitions. It will be extremely tough to beat a stubborn Burnley side on Monday and this is exactly the sort of fixture that has caused Liverpool problems over the past two seasons, as we saw when Burnley beat Liverpool 2-0 last season. I’m backing this game to end in a draw, but if anyone is going to win it, it will be Liverpool.
Burnley v Liverpool – Betting Odds and Predictions
Liverpool start this game as 1/2 favourites to pick up the victory, whilst a home win for Burnley is priced up at a massive 6/1, with the draw available at 16/5.
Top Betting Tip Burnley v Liverpool
I think the draw is extremely likely here and in all honesty, I think both managers would probably take a draw with no injuries before kick off in this match. In terms of goals, Under 2.5 Goals at Evens looks like a solid bet to me too, especially when you look at Burnley’s record at home this season and how few goals have been scored by either side.
