Aston Villa pay millions for successor Steven Gerrard
Unai Emery is to succeed Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa. Emery was at the helm at Villarreal in recent seasons, with whom he was particularly successful in the European comeptitions.
Aston Villa finished 14th in the Premier League last season. However, the club is aiming for a place in the left row and did not waste any time in the summer transfer market. Aston Villa paid over sixty million euros for the arrival of Diego Carlos, Philippe Coutinho and Leander Dendoncker. But despite all that investment, Aston Villa are in a disappointing fourteenth place, with just twelve points from as many games.
Aston Villa suffered an embarrassing 3-0 defeat against Fulham last Thursday. Gerrard was relieved of his duties after the match. Promptly, Aston Villa won 4-0 against Brentford yesterday. Interim coach Aaron Danks was in charge of the group, but Emery is set to guide the Birmingham club to the left-hand row. This was reported by Fabrizio Romano earlier this evening and has just been confirmed by Aston Villa themselves. Emery could be picked up from Villarreal for six million euros.
Emery had been head coach at Villarreal since the summer of 2020. With the Spanish club, he won the Europa League a year later by beating Manchester United in the final after penalties. Last season, Villarreal reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.
