Argentina vs Chile Game Preview
Once again, Lionel Messi and Argentina will end the Copa America without a trophy after losing to the hosts Brazil while Chile suffered a surprising 3-0 defeat to Peru. Los Incas had only three shots on target, but all three were goals while La Roja had 19 attempts including seven on target, but Pedro Gallese was fantastic at the goal.
Argentina Team News and Latest Form
Ahead of this Copa America 3rd place play-off, Argentina look primed to establish their dominance over Chile in the all-time series (W58, D24, L6). That noted, Argentina failed to win their opening two games, even when as clear pre-match favourites.
After that “false start” Argentina strung together two consecutive 2-0 victories. Notably, four of Argentina’s five Copa America matches have now ended 2-0 one way or the other (W2, D1, L2), and that could yet combine with the fact that no Argentina side has yet lost against a team fielded by Chile coach Reinaldo Rueda (W2, D3).
LautaroMartínez has scored a first-half opener in two of their last three matches; he has been booked in their previous two. With 15 yellow cards, Argentina are the worst-disciplined side in this year’s Copa America (3.0 per-match on average).
Chile Team News and Latest Form
Chile are not massive underdogs, having lost just three of their last 17 matches at these finals: W10, D4, L3 (90 minutes only). Chile have scored an average of 2.06 goals per game across the period mentioned above, although they managed just one goal in three matches vs Argentina across it.
In the event of a penalty shootout, Chile could also utilise their residual momentum from previous campaigns, having beaten Argentina on penalties in two of the last three Copa America finals meetings.
Eduardo Vargas scored a third of Chile’s goals, prior to their barren run of 339 minutes of football without a goal from open play up to this point. Reinaldo Rueda is unbeaten in two of his three encounters with higher-ranked opposition during his reign as Chile head coach (W1, D1, L1).
Argentina vs Chile Head to Head
La Albiceleste are dominant in H2H encounters as Chile recorded just eight wins since their first meeting in 1910. However, two of those eight victories came in the last five duels including the one in the finals of the 2016 Copa America when they beat Argentina on penalties to defending the title. Argentina secured a narrow, 1-0 win in the most recent clash thanks to Leo Messi’s first-half penalty. Four of the last five competitive H2H matches have now seen the half-time scoreline match the one recorded at full-time.
Argentina vs Chile Betting Tip
Each of Argentina’s five games at this year’s Copa America produced precisely two goals and considering the recent H2H record and the fact that these rivals combined for just one goal in the last 180 minutes of play, I am going with a low-scoring affair here. Chile failed to find the back of the net in the previous three matches after scoring six in the opening two, and following a disappointing loss to Peru, I seriously doubt their motivation in this one.
Backing Argentina at 4/5 odds with Betfair is not such a bad option, but a lot of knockout matches at this tournament were decided after penalties, so I am not going to bet on a full-time result. The 1/1 odds on under 2.5 goals with bet365 looks like a more attractive option to me, and you can back it if you want to double your stake.
