Portugal and France were among the top favorites going into the tournament, and we can’t wait to see them collide in the quarterfinal at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg on July 5th.
Portugal vs France: Initial situation
Portugal and France are among the best teams in Europe in the past decades, and we expect nothing but a real spectacle when they meet in the quarterfinals. Portugal barely made it this far, and France has also been far from their best form. Given the quality of both sides, they have many players who can take over the big scene and decide this game with one move.
Portugal Stats & Form
Portugal was on the verge of being eliminated in the round of 16 games against Slovenia. They came into that one as huge favorites given the fact that Slovenia came back to the tournament for the first time in 24 years and most of their players play in just an average league. Still, Slovenia has one of the best goalkeepers in the world, in Jan Oblak, who managed to save Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty in extra time. Anyway, Portugal’s goalkeeper Diogo Costa was the real hero of the game, saving the first three penalties in the shootout, which got Portugal through to the quarterfinal.
Portugal is definitely not in their best form after this performance and the 2-0 loss in the last matchday of the group stage against Georgia. Luckily, they defeated the Czech Republic and Turkey in the first two games in the group stage, which was enough to go through.
Portugal has seven wins and three losses in the last ten games. In four of their last five games only one team scored, and in six of their last nine games there were at least three goals in total.
France Stats & Form
France found their way to the quarterfinals even though we saw nothing of their offense everybody was talking about. France was the better team in the round of 16 match against Belgium, but they needed a lucky late own goal by Jan Vertonghen to get through to the final eight. France had the majority of the possession and created many scoring opportunities, but once again they could not execute.
That was only the second win for France at the tournament, and two of their three goals were actually own goals. They defeated Austria with an own gola to open the tournament and then played 0-0 against the Netherlands. In the last game of the group stage, France played only 1-1 against Poland, who had no chance of advancing going into that game.
France has five wins, four draws, and one loss in the last ten games. Their last five games and six of the last ten have ended under 2.5 goals in total.
Portugal vs France: Head to Head
These two teams have played against each other ten times before, with France winning four of those games, Portugal one, and five of them ending in a tie. The last time they played was in the group stage of the previous EURO, when the score was 2-2. They played in the Nations League in 2020, with France winning 1-0 on the road and in Portugal the score was 0-0. Portugal’s only win over France came in the extra time of the 2016 EURO Final, which is the biggest win in Portugal’s history.
Portugal vs France Odds
France is a slight favorite going into this game with the odds 140 in their favor. The odds for Portugal’s win are at 225 while for the draw 210.
The total goal line is set at 2.5 with 135 for over and -180 for under.
Betting tip and prediction: Portugal vs France (05.07.2024)
In a rematch of the 2016 EURO final, Portugal and France will go against each other in what will probably be an epic game. Neither team played their best football so far in the tournament, and we expect them to finally show their full capacity and quality in this game.
France has more top-level players, but their offense has been desperate so far in the tournament. Kylian Mbappe is not even close to his form, and it is obvious that the nose injury he suffered in the group stage has taken a huge toll on his game.
On the other side, Cristiano Ronaldo has not scored yet in the tournament, and we are expecting him to score when it counts the most and make it up for the missed penalty against Slovenia.
This game can go either way, and we expect both teams to wake up and, despite the stakes, play offensive football, which will bring at least one goal for both sides.
