The bottom half of the draw at Flushing Meadows was blown wide open on Sunday evening with Petra Kvitova’s impressive dismantling of tournament favourite Garbine Muguruza. The Spaniard simply couldn’t cope with Kvitova’s consistency and was eventually broken down in straight sets – to continue the Czech player’s incredible run since her horrific injury sustained in December 2016. Maria Sharapova was also sent packing on Sunday by Anastasija Sevastova and there is home interest with both Sloane Stephens and Venus Williams still in the competition.
Here’s our run down the two women’s quarter finals taking place on Tuesday:
Venus Williams vs Petra Kvitova
A genuine heavyweight clash between 2 players that have won no fewer than 9 Grand Slam titles between them. Venus’s spectacular 2017 has been well documented and this is her 3rd Grand Slam quarter final of the year. Kvitova has shown incredible physical and mental resilience this year following an attempted robbery at her home in Czech Republic that drew fears she may never be able to compete at the top level again. Her form has steadily increased since her return in June and she looks to be back to somewhere near her best.
Head to Head
Kvitova is one of very few players to hold a superior head to head over Venus – she leads 4:1 and Venus hasn’t beaten Kvitova for over 5 years on the WTA tour.
Odds and Predictions
Kvitova defies her seeding and ranking and starts as the 4/5 favourite with William Hill whilst the small margins between these 2 players are highlighted with Venus’s odds of 6/5 with Bet Victor – this should be a very close match indeed.
Backing the match to go to 3 sets looks a good move at 11/8 with Sky Bet.
Kvitova has been in great form this week and should be buoyed by her victory over Muguruza in round 4.
Kvitova to win by 2 sets to 1 is well priced at 3/1 with Coral.
Provided the match goes all the way to 3 sets – lots of games a guaranteed.
Over 23.5 games in the match is a logical bet at 11/10 with Ladbrokes.
Top Bet
Their last 3 meetings have been incredibly tight affairs and have all contained tie-breaks.
A tie-break in the match looks tempting at a generous 9/4 with Bet 365.
Anastasija Sevastova vs Sloane Stephens
Two of the surprise packages in New York meet on Tuesday with a Grand Slam semi-final place on the line. Stephens’s recovery from her foot injury that kept her out of action for almost a year has been incredible. Reaching the semi-finals in Toronto and Cincinnati seems to have given her confidence and form that she has carried into the final Grand Slam of the year. Sevastova is looking to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Jelena Ostapenko and claim her maiden Grand Slam in 2017. The Latvian showed remarkable mental toughness to overcome Maria Sharapova in round 4 and is a real contender here.
Head to Head
This will be first ever match-up between these 2 women and with similar game styles on display, the spectators in New York are sure to be in for a treat.
Odds and Predictions
Stephens’s recent form sees her start as the 8/13 favourite with William Hill whilst Savastova is the outsider as 13/10 with Boyle Sports.
Neither woman has endured a tie-break as yet in this year’s US Open.
No tie-break in the match looks a valuable punt at 2/7 with Coral.
Stephens will have home backing and is the in-form player on the WTA Tour.
Backing Stephens to win by 2 sets to 0 looks good value at 6/4 with Betfair.
Big games are often decided by the smallest margins particularly in Grand Slam tennis.
A winning margin of 1-4 games is a savvy punt at 1/1 with Paddy Power.
Top Bet
Under 22.5 games in the match looks a shrewd bet at 4/5 with Boyle Sports.
