The much discussed top half of the men’s draw takes centre stage at Flushing Meadows on Monday with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal still on course for a historic semi-final meeting in New York. There are plenty of other potential suitors in action on Monday with Juan Martin Del Potro, David Goffin and Dominic Thiem also in action in a congested section of the draw.
Here’s our run down of all 4 men’s matches taking place in New York on Monday:
Roger Federer vs Phillipp Kohlschreiber
Federer appeared to be hitting his straps on Saturday evening with his consummate display against Feliciano Lopez. The consistent serving that has been the mainstay of his success in 2017 was back and the Spaniard simply had no answer. Kohlschreiber is demonstrating some good form here in New York and is looking as if he’s back to his best following a couple of difficult seasons. The German was as high as number 16 in the world back in 2012 but has struggled for form since.
Head to Head
As with most players on the ATP tour, Kohlschreiber has a dreadful record against Federer – this will be their 12th meeting with Federer winning all 11 of their previous match-ups. Unsurprisingly, Federer is the 1/6 favourite with Marathon Bet whilst Kohlschreiber is 5/1 with Sky Bet to open his account against Federer.
Top Bet
Federer should simply have too much for Kohlschreiber who simply doesn’t possess the weapons required to trouble the Swiss legend – Federer to win by 3 sets to 0 and serve the most aces is 2.03/1 with Sky Bet.
David Goffin vs Andrey Rublev
Goffin will be delighted to find himself in the second week of a Grand Slam following a difficult 2017. The Belgian has been plagued by injury but could be hitting form at the right time in New York. He had to grind his wins out in rounds 1 and 2 but breezed into round 4 following the retirement of the dangerous Gael Monfils in the last round. Rublev is a youngster with a seriously big future and is in unchartered territory here. The Russian has breezed into round 4 defeating Grigor Dimitov and Aljaz Bedene along the way.
Head to Head
This will be first ever match-up between these 2 men and with similar game styles on display, the spectators in New York are sure to be in for a treat. Goffin’s experience at this level explains his heavy favouritism at 8/15 with Paddy Power whilst Rublev is 13/8 with Ladbrokes to progress.
Top Bet
Calling this match is tough as Rublev has blown away all of his opponents so far with his power and Goffin has had very little match exposure of late. The Belgian should have enough though – Goffin to win and over 3 sets to be played in the match – pays a healthy 2.30/ with Coral.
Juan Martin Del Potro vs Dominic Thiem
On paper, this should be the match of the round. Del Potro’s 2017 has been consistent in comparison to his previous couple of years – but more importantly it’s been injury free. He has all the attributes to be dining at the top table on the ATP tour. Thiem has had a breakthrough year, reaching the last 4 at Roland Garros but has struggled for form since Wimbledon and his hectic schedule could have caught up with him somewhat.
Head to Head
This will be the 3rd meeting between these 2 men and they met at the same point of the US Open last year with Del Potro coming through due to Thiem having to retire from the match. Del Potro leads the head to head 2:0 and defies his inferior ranking to be the 4/5 favourite here with Sky Bet whilst Thiem is 11/10 with Ladbrokes to reach another Grand Slam quarter final this year.
Top Bet
Whilst all the attention is on Federer and Nadal, both of these men will be eager to sneak under the radar and reach the last 8. Del Potro is looking strong at the moment though and looks good value to come through by 3 sets to 1 at 4/1 with Uni Bet.
Rafael Nadal vs Alexandr Dolgopolov
World number 1 Nadal has steadily warmed to the task in New York his year and looked solid in his round 3 win over Leonardo Mayer on Saturday. Hard courts aren’t his favoured surface but his mix of heavy hitting and efficient movement always make him very difficult to break down. Dolgopolov has reached round 4 in a Grand Slam for the first time and will be delighted to be performing on the big stage following a disastrous 2016.
Head to Head
This is the 9th meeting between these 2 men with Nadal leading the head to head 6:2. Their last meeting was in Brisbane earlier this year which the Spaniard won convincingly. Rafa is 1/8 with Boyle Sports whilst Dolgopolov is 11/2 with William Hill to upset the form book.
Top Bet
Nadal should dispatch of the Ukranian with minimal fuss and take a step closer to the dream tie with Federer. Backing Nadal to win with a games handicap of -6.5 looks a good bet at 4/5 with Bet 365.
