Men Tennis Betting Tips: US Open – Day 1 – Monday 28/08/17
The final major of the year gets underway on Monday in New York and following the withdrawal of Andy Murray on Saturday evening – the draw looks more open than ever before. The official draw was announced on Friday (prior to Murray’s withdrawal) meaning he has now relinquished his second seed position in the draw which blows the bottom half wide open. Alexander Zverev and Marin Cilic headline the players in the lower section of the draw but there will be 64 men who will fancy their chances of going deep at Flushing Meadows.
Here are some of the big match-ups on the opening day:
Match Betting
Alexander Zverev (4) vs Darian King
Such has been Zverev’s meteoric rise in 2017 that he now headlines play, on opening night, on the Arthur Ashe stadium court. The German has picked up 5 ATP Tour level titles in 2017 and is now best priced at 11/2 with Bet Victor to win his maiden Grand Slam. His opponent in round 1 is the Barbadian Darian King who is making his first appearance in the main draw of a major and looks to have a strong all-court game that could challenge Zverev.
Head to Head
This is the first tour level meeting between these two men and their gulf in the rankings is reflected in the odds – Zverev is 1/40 with Bet 365 whilst King is 20/1 with Marathon Bet.
Top Bet
Zverev should wrap this one up comfortably and he has been in imperious form all year – particularly on the hard courts – under 28.5 games in the match looks a savvy punt at 4/5 with Bet Victor.
Denis Shapovalov vs Daniil Medvedev
Both of these men have emerged as part of the next generation on the ATP Tour and will feel a little aggrieved to be meeting so early on in New York. Shapovalov has had to come through qualifying to earn his place here at Flushing Meadows but his hard court swing has been remarkable – the highlight being a win over world number 1 Rafa Nadal in Montreal earlier this month. Medvedev has also reached new heights in 2017 but hasn’t shown his top form on the hard courts of late – losing in the first round in his last 3 events.
Head to Head
This is the first ATP tour level meeting between these 2 men and it promises to be a fascinating encounter. Medvedev’s extra experience at this level perhaps justifies his favouritism at 4/5 with Sky Bet whilst Shapovalov will be keen to show his worth at Evens with Bet 365.
Top Bet
This will be one of the highlights of the opening day at Flushing Meadows – backing it to go all the way to 5 sets looks shrewd at 11/5 with William Hill.
Sam Querrey vs Gilles Simon
Two of the most consistent performers on tour meet in another fascinating first round battle in New York. Home favourite and Wimbledon semi-finalist Querrey has been resurgent in 2017 but hasn’t shown his best form on the hard courts lately and withdrew from Winston Salem last week with injury. Simon hasn’t had his best season and has slipped out of the world’s top 32 meaning he’s not seeded here.
Head to Head
This will be the 6th meeting between these 2 stalwarts with Simon leading the H2H 4:1. Querrey’s more notable form this year sees him start as the 2/5 favourite with Coral whilst Simon represents good value at 2/1 with Ladbrokes.
Top Bet
This promises to be an entertaining encounter with Querrey able to call upon the fabled home crowd in NYC. Backing the match to contain a tie-break and Querrey to in – as a double – pays 2.14 with Ladbrokes.
