South Korea World Cup 2022 – Latest Team News and Statistics
The 2022 World Cup started for South Korea, as mentioned, with a 0-0 draw against Uruguay. Portuguese coach Paulo Bento’s team applied a lot of energy, but the South Koreans did not really become dangerous. Much came down to the shoulders of Tottenham Hotspur player Heung Min Son. He was then also covered short by Uruguay’s defenders. Other than that, that leaves too little quality in the team.
Perhaps Bento will think about the striker position. Ui-Jo Hwang disappointed there, actually losing more ball than keeping it. This prevented South Korea’s three attacking midfielders from closing in and becoming dangerous. Gue-Sung Cho did not fare much better, but at least South Korea kept the ball in the team more in the closing stages of the match.
A more central role for Son could be a solution. Now he comes from the side and is often too late to be really dangerous. It is important that he gets supply from the midfielders. The question is whether they are capable of launching Son sufficiently.
Whether Ghana is also capable of shutting Son down so well, that will be the key to this match. The winner of this duel gives itself the best chance of challenging Uruguay to secure the second spot behind Portugal. The loser of this duel is likely to be eliminated.
Ghana 2022 – Latest Team News and Statistics
Ghana started their World Cup 2022 with a defeat against Portugal (3-2). The first half still ended 0-0, but in the second half it became a true goal-fest. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring with an easily awarded penalty. There, André Ayew brought Ghana level in the 73rd minute and Ghana could briefly hope for a stunt.
A very curious double substitution by coach Otto Addo led to Ghana’s downfall. In the 77th minute, Addo pulled out Ghana’s best man, Mohammed Kudus, to the side. Goalkeeper Ayew was also substituted. Portugal then scored the 2-1 and 3-1 in the 78th and 80th minutes. Very noticeable and clearly an error of judgement by Addo. Ghana, through Osman Bukari, did come back. Unfortunately, this tying goal came too late and the final score was 3-2 for Portugal.
In the last minute, Iñaki Williams had a giant chance. He almost beat goalkeeper Diogo Costa. The Portuguese goalkeeper did not count on the running back Williams and almost gave away the equaliser.
If Addo switches better then this could well prove advantageous for Ghana against South Korea. The four-time African champion must win against South Korea to keep a chance of a possible next round.
