Reigning world champions France start the 2022 World Cup against Australia, who are there for the fifth time in a row at the global Nations tournament. Les Bleus are considered one of the biggest favourites for the World Cup. Will Australia cause a surprise or will Didier Deschamps’ star squad waltz over The Socceroos? In this preview, we look ahead to this World Cup match in Group D, with a prediction and a betting tip. Furthermore, we also go over the odds at the bookmakers with you.

France World Cup 2022 – Latest Team News and Statistics

France qualified fairly easily for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In the qualification phase, it remained well ahead of number two Ukraine and number three Finland. Of the eight matches, the French did not lose a single one and they only conceded three goals. In the Nations League 2022/23, however, the curtain fell early: in six matches, France picked up just five points.

Deschamps selected a fine list of names for the World Cup. Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappé should provide the goals, super talents Eduardo Camavinga and Aurélien Tchouaméni for stability. At the back, the French can rely on Dayot Upamecano and the Hernández brothers, among others.

Despite a hugely strong squad, there are also some big names missing from the French selection. Just before the World Cup, Karim Benzema had to drop out injured. Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kanté, who became world champions four years ago at the expense of Croatia, are also absent in Qatar due to injury. The same goes for defender Presnel Kimpembe and RB Leipzig striker Christopher Nkunku. Olivier Giroud can be found in the selection, however. The AC Milan striker needs two more goals to match Thierry Henry as Les Bleus’ all-time top scorer.

Australia World Cup 2022 – Latest Team News and Statistics

Australia is the current number 38 in the FIFA world rankings. Since the country switched from the Oceanic to the Asian Football Association in 2006, things have been moving in the right direction. Indeed, in Qatar, the Australians are there for the fifth time in a row at a World Cup. However, of the 16 World Cup matches in that span, The Socceroos won only two.

Under Graham Arnold, a former NAC Breda player, Australia had to work hard earlier this year to secure a ticket to the 2022 World Cup. In the group stage of the qualification series, it finished well clear of Saudi Arabia and Japan, forcing a play-off match against Peru. In a nail-biter, Australia won the penalty series from the South Americans, 5-4.

Arnold’s selection features as many as 17 players who were not there in Russia four years ago. Some better-known names are goalkeeper Mathew Ryan and striker Mathew Leckie, who are playing their third World Cup in Qatar. Striker Jamie Maclaren is also Socceroo. He accounted for 64 league goals in Australia over the past three seasons.

France – Australia Previous encounters

France and Australia will meet for the third time at the 2022 World Cup. The previous encounter was at the 2018 World Cup, also in the group stage. Then, the French struggled quite a bit to secure the spoils. It required an own goal by Australia ten minutes before time (2-1). The previous encounter was friendly, in 2013. France won convincingly 6-0 then. After half an hour it was already 4-0, thanks in part to two goals by Giroud.

France – Australia, World Cup 2022: Betting Tip & Odds

France are the bookmakers’ clear favourites for the encounter with Australia. We also think Les Bleus are off to a flying start at the 2022 World Cup. The Socceroos couldn’t have been more close and Deschamps’ selection is full of big names. Australia, on the other hand, travels to Qatar with a rather inexperienced squad. If the French score at least three goals, which is not inconceivable with a player like Mbappé in the ranks, bookmaker Unibet will return more than twice your bet.
