Dominic Thiem headlines day 2 in Montreal with the big seeds entering the action following their opening round byes. Despite the weather threatening to cause a few issues on Monday, there were some great matches and some surprising results. 13th seed Lucas Pouille and 14th seed John Isner were the 2 biggest names to fall at the first hurdle – losing to Jared Donaldson and Juan Martin Del Potro respectively.
Tuesday once more provides some potentially enthralling match-ups with so many littered throughout the draw.
Diego Schwartzman vs Dominic Thiem
Number 3 seed Thiem starts as the very strong favourite for this one (1/3 with Ladbrokes) and he’ll be hoping to get over his frustrating defeat to Kevin Anderson in Washington last week. He won’t be expecting to have it all his own way against the Argentine Schwartzman, who is 13/5 with BetVictor.
Head to Head
Thiem leads the H2H 3:0 – last defeating Schwartzman on the clay in Rio earlier this year.
Top Bet
Thiem has yet to find his feet on the hard courts yet this season but shouldn’t find this one too difficult. He looks good value at 10/11 with Ladbrokes to progress in straight sets.
Pablo Carreno Busta vs Karen Khachanov
Two of the in-form men of 2017 meet in an intriguing battle. 11th seed Carreno Busta looks to be finally coming of age on the ATP tour and has been in sensational form this year. Khachanov has really broken through this year with a string of strong performances at tour and grand slam level and at 21 years of age, looks a great prospect. Despite his superior ranking, Carreno Busta starts as the outsider here (11/8 Bet 365), whilst Khachanov is 4/6 with Marathon Bet.
Head to Head
Carreno Busta won the only meeting between the pair, on the clay in Monte Carlo earlier this year and will be hoping for a similar result here.
Top Bet
Carreno Busta missed Wimbledon through injury and could be easing his way back into things here but will definitely fancy his chances against Khachanov. Carreno Busta to win 2 sets to 1 looks very good at 21/5 with UniBet.
Jared Donaldson vs Benoit Paire
Another 2017 startlet Jared Donaldson will be hoping to back up his impressive win over Lucas Pouille yesterday against Benoit Paire. Paire defeated Donald Young yesterday and will be hoping he can kick on from that against another American youngster. Paire starts as the slight favourite here (5/6 Sporting Bet) whilst Donaldson isn’t far behind him – Evens with Bet 365.
Head to Head
This will be only the second meeting between the pair at tour level with Paire clinching the win in on the hard court at Washington last year.
Top Bet
Both men have been in fantastic form recently and will fancy their chances. The match to go to 3 sets at 6/5 with William Hill looks to represent good value.
