The second quarter final at the Women’s Euro 2017 sees tournament favourites Germany taking on underdogs Denmark. The Germans are the powerhouses, the undisputed ones at that in the women’s game as they are on the march for what would be their seventh successive Women’s Euro title. That’s is a staggeringly phenomenal record and it doesn’t appear too likely that they will be stopped in the quarter finals this time around as they go up against the Danes. Germany are 1/2 odds on at Ladbrokes for the win, leaving Denmark way out at sixes.
However, the Germans are facing the last side to beat them in a knockout match in the Women’s Euro, although obviously, that is going back some years. The Danes came through their group in second place behind host nation the Netherlands and haven’t exactly been rewarded too well for their efforts as this is just about the toughest game that they could have gotten. But with France having failed to win their group, the draw ahead from the bottom section of the draw is now wide open and Germany will recognise the opportunity ahead of them.
Germany Form
Germany came into the tournament as the red hot favourites, with only France looking set to really challenge their dominance. But there will be no big France v Germany semi final because the French didn’t win their group and they are in the other half of the draw now. So the road ahead to the final for Germany is clear. They will want to find better form though as they haven’t been in top gear, only drawing with Sweden and then coming from behind to beat Italy in the group. They rounded off with a comfortable win over Russia, but three of their four goals in the group have been from the penalty spot. They haven’t been quite as free flowing as expected.
Denmark Form
The Danes proved to be a gritty brunch in getting out of their group. They beat both Belgium and Norway by one goal margins but suffered a loss against the Netherlands, who are nowhere near as good as Germany are, so that’s a good indicator for this one. The Danes don’t have a great deal of firepower in their ranks really so they will be looking to hold as tight as they possibly can for as long as they can when they take on the Germans. This will be just the second quarter final appearance for them in the Euros after beating France at this stage in 2013 on penalties.
News
These two have met 21 times before (competitively and in friendly matches) and Germany hold a W12 D4 L5 record against Denmark. From those games, Germany have scored 44 goals to Denmark’s 17. They have met six times in the Euro’s (including qualifying) before and the head to head reads W3 D1 L2 in favour of the Germans. So that’s pretty narrow. Germany’s only loss against Denmark in the Euros was a 1993 third-place play off match, which as mentioned above, is the last time that Germany lost a knockout match in the tournament.
Top Betting Tips
Germany should have the quality in depth to get through this one. The Danes are probably going to not do much else other than try to produce an epic display of defensive resilience to hang in there. It is unlikely that you will see them opening up. Germany haven’t hit their stride yet, which is a worry for the rest, and while they are a tempting 6/5 to win to nil at Betway a 1-0 correct score for 5/1 at William Hill screams appeal.
