With the first division proper getting underway in just over a week’s time, last season’s champions Anderlecht take on the up and coming Zulte-Waregem in the proverbial curtain raiser at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium. Having added the likes of Henry Onyekuru and goalkeeper Matz Sels to their ranks over the summer, Anderlecht will once again be the team to beat, however Zulte-Waregem proved last season that they are a match for anyone on their day.
The betting odds from the bookmakers certainly reflect this increased competition between the two teams, with plenty of bets expected for the encounter. As a result, let’s take a look at the two teams, as well as our top betting tip for the match.
Anderlecht Form
Manager René Weiler led his team to the Belgium title thanks to juts one defeat in the Championship play-off stage, eventually finishing seven points clear of closest rivals Club Brugge. In addition to the arrivals of both Onyekuru and Sels, Anderlecht splashed over £5 million in order to attract Sven Kums from English Premier League side, Watford. Given their strength in depth, the Purple and Whites will now be expected to once again set the pace in Belgium. However, having already suffered defeat at the hands of Zulte-Waregem last season, Anderlecht will know that they are not in for an easy ride as they bid to win the Super Cup once more.
Zulte-Waregem Form
Having finished in third place in the table after 30 games last season, Zulte-Waregem came unstuck during the play-offs, winning just one of their ten games in finishing in last place. However, manager Francky Dury, who has been in charge at the Regenboogstadion since 2012, has seen vast improvement in his team, with an encounter with Anderlecht now not a tie in with they are the major underdogs. New signing Gertjan De Mets joins the likes of Onur Kaya and Timothy Derijick as some of the teams standout players.
Top Betting Tip
Anderlecht are the most successful teams in Belgian footballing history for a reason, and it is therefore difficult to look past another win for René Weiler and his players. Despite Zulte-Waregem undoubtedly having a chance in the match, our top betting tip is to back Anderlecht to come out on top, which can be found at best odds of 4/11 on at William Hill.
