South Africa vs Morocco Game Preview
South Africa bounced back from an opening loss to Ivory Coast with a tight win over Namibia, and now they have an opportunity to even finish at the top of the group with three points here. On the other hand, Morocco secured a couple of identical 1-0 victories over Namibia and Ivory Coast, and they already booked their place in the 1/8 finals, and are favourites in this one.
South Africa Team News and Latest Form
South Africa must get at least a draw to all but ensure passage through to the Africa Cup of Nations knockout phase. Each of the last three H2Hs has ended level, though the last two have seen one team lead 1-0 at half-time.
Whatever the result, it could be a tight affair, with eight of South Africa’s last ten matches producing under 2.5 total goals. Furthermore, South Africa head coach Stuart Baxter has seen four of his previous eight games in charge end level.
South Africa’s Percy Tau has been involved in all three goals across his nation’s only two 90-minute victories in 2019, with those contributions all coming in the second half (two goals, one assist). South Africa’s recent historical form in the final group game of this competition is poor (D3, L2). Going back to February 2013, South Africa have – by contrast – won just one of the last five AFCON finals fixtures where they have drawn first blood (W1, D2, L2).
Morocco Team News and Latest Form
Morocco are already through to the knockout stage of this AFCON finals, seeing three of what is currently four consecutive AFCON group stage victories produce a 1-0 scoreline.
Notably, two of those three 1-0 victories saw the winning goal arrive beyond the hour mark. Overall, five of Morocco’s last seven matches (all competitions) have ended 1-0 either way, though ironically, all five historical H2Hs have seen both teams score.
The only Moroccan player to score at this year’s AFCON, Youssef En-Neysri, has scored the winning goal in two of his nation’s last three group stage victories. A 2-2 draw vs South Africa (Jan 2013) remains the last time Morocco failed to win an AFCON finals match after scoring first.
South Africa vs Morocco Head to Head
South Africa and Morocco have met on five occasions since 1998, and, interestingly, the Atlas Lions have never beat Bafana Bafana. South Africa have two wins with three draws, and all three draws occurred in the previous three encounters. Each of those five meetings produced goals on both sides, but they haven’t faced since 2013.
South Africa vs Morocco Betting Tip
South Africa played low-scoring games recently, and we didn’t see more than one goal in each of their previous four games including opening two at this tournament, which ended 1-0. That’s why we’re not suggesting you go with goals here, especially considering that eight of Morocco’s last ten matches produced under 2.5 goals. That being said, you can opt for under 2.5 goals at 1/2 with William Hill but consider this our additional pick.
Our first pick would be a draw at 11/5 with bet365, not because the last three H2H meetings ended without a winner, but also because both sides would be happy with a point. If you take a look at H2H record, a draw with goals should be a good tip, but this competition and mainly this group are not very goal-friendly so that we wouldn’t advise betting on a high-scoring affair.
