Uruguay vs Peru Game Preview
Uruguay topped Group C with a decisive 1-0 win over Chile, and instead of going on Colombia in the quarter-finals, they got a considerably weaker opponent – Peru. Los Incas are trying to recover from a shock caused by the hosts Brazil, who destroyed Peru 5-0. However, they will find it hard to do it against the team they only beat once in this decade.
Uruguay Team News and Latest Form
Rounding off their Copa America group stage with a 1-0 win over Chile, Uruguay are masters of holding out after drawing first blood. They have now done this in five of their last six matches, while additionally scoring inside the final 15 minutes of each victory.
Uruguay’s victory over Chile also represented La Celeste’s fourth Copa America game without defeat (W3, D1). Curiously, in addition to producing a winning margin of 3+ goals, two of the wins in that sequence saw Uruguay’s opponents on the day net an own-goal inside the final half-hour.
Edinson Cavani netted the winner against Chile which was his second strike of this Copa America, with both goals arriving in the final 15 minutes of either half. Five of Uruguay’s last six victories have seen them win both halves.
Peru Team News and Latest Form
A 5-0 defeat to Brazil last time out served to illustrate the gulf that still exists between Peru and the elite. Overall, Ricardo Gareca’s men have a poor record (W1, D2, L3) from their last six Copa America matches against CONMEBOL opposition currently ranked inside FIFA’s top-20.
The Brazil result was an anomaly, however, with five of those matches in the above sequence separating the teams by no more than a one-goal margin, if at all. Additionally, the first half is usually close when these nations meet, with Peru’s last two clashes against Uruguay seeing one team win after a level half-time score. Since 1995, Peru have participated in two Copa America knockout stage shootouts, going out both times.
Uruguay vs Peru Head to Head
These rivals have faced 41 times since 1927 and Uruguay are dominant in H2H encounters with 25 victories; Peru have 11 wins with five draws. However, Los Incas were a better side in the previous H2H duel as they beat Uruguay 2-1 in World Cup qualifier. Paolo Guerrero and Edison Flores scored for Peru after Carlos Sanchez’s opener. None of the six H2Hs contested in the 2010s decade have seen the teams separated by over 1.5 goals at half-time.
Uruguay vs Peru Betting Tip
Uruguay are favourites at 7/10 odds with Betfair, and although anything could happen in the knockout phase, I am still backing La Celeste to get a victory and advance to the semis. Peru will be looking to bounce back from a devastating loss to Brazil and try to show they deserved to be among the top eight teams in the continent. They do have good players up front and considering that four of the previous six H2h duels produced goals on both ends, my additional pick is both teams to score at 6/5 with bet365.
