The big question this week in the world of horse racing is which of the runners in this Saturday’s Irish Derby (June 29) will add his name to the list of equine stars that have graced the Curragh’s third classic of the season since the race’s inception in 1866.
The names of Nijinsky, Grundy, Troy, Shergar, Sinndar, and Camelot jump off the page as horses that won both the Epsom Derby and the Irish Derby, and the bookies have installed the 2019 Epsom Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck as the favourite to add his name to that list.

Irish Derby 2019 Main Contenders
Anthony Van Dyck
Everything he did as a two-year-old was simply a stepping-stone to this year when he has come into his own over middle-distances. He proved his stamina when winning the Lingfield Derby Trial and stayed out of trouble with a late run down the inside to land the spoils at Epsom. There shouldn’t be much between him and the second and third that day, but it’s interesting that he was only the third string of the Aidan O’Brien team at Epsom.
Madhmoon
Was being talked about as a 2,000 Guineas horse for most of the winter after impressively winning a group two race on his second start as a two-year-old, but he looked outpaced in the English 2,000 Guineas when running on to be fourth. He seemed to appreciate the step up to 12-furlongs in the Epsom Derby and was unlucky to meet trouble in running before being beaten by half-a-length in a blanket finish for second. He should be involved in the finish.
Broome
Wasn’t one of the leading lights at the Aidan O’Brien stable as a two-year-old, including when beaten by Mahdmoon, but he has thrived for running over longer distances this season. He maybe wasn’t ideally positioned out wide in the Epsom Derby, but still held every chance before finishing fourth in a race where the first five were covered by a length. He has every right to go close again but may not quite have the turn-of-foot of the other two market leaders.
Rakan
The bookies are betting 20/1 bar the first three in the market but, if there is to be a shock, it could be this Dermot Weld trained colt. He’s had just four runs, finishing nearly five-lengths behind Broome in the third of those, but appreciating the step up to 12-furlongs last time.
Irish Derby 2019 Summary
A win for anything other than one of the three market leaders would be a shock, and there shouldn’t be much between them once again. But it was Anthony Van Dyck who showed the greater reserves of stamina at Epsom, and he’s fancied to come out on top again with Ryan Moore reportedly taking the ride.
