The Chipchase Stakes (Saturday 29 June) is a Group 3 Race run over six furlongs on the all-weather track at Newcastle Racecourse on the same day as the Northumberland Plate. It was established in 1994, when it was run on the turf course, but switched to the all-weather in 2016. Since that switch, the winners have been Markaz, Koropick, and Above The Rest.

Chipchase Stakes 2019 Main Contenders
Invincible Army
Had looked an improved horse when winning his first two runs of the season, but he wasn’t up to Group 1 company last time. He has a better record at this level, winning two of his four Group 3 Races, whilst he’s also won a Group 2. He’s penalised 5lb for that Group 2 win but it’s interesting that he broke the six-furlong track record at Kempton on his only previous run on the all-weather.
Mr Lupton
Has won over a variety of sprint trips and recorded his first win in a Group 2 in what was probably a weaker race than this on his last start. He gets a 5lb penalty for that and is rated 4lb inferior to the other penalised runner Invincible Army. This is also his first run on an all-weather track, and Newcastle may test his stamina.
Glorious Journey
Has a possible alternative engagement in the Criterion Stakes at Newmarket over seven furlongs, but connections may opt to come here after he got within a length of Dream Of Dreams last time, and that horse has run well since in Group 1 company at Royal Ascot. However, he’s yet to run on the all-weather and his last win came over a mile.
Laugh A Minute
Normally runs well in any race over six furlongs or seven furlongs, but six furlongs on the straight track at Newcastle could prove an ideal test for him. He does have a few pounds to find on ratings with several of his rivals but his trainer could not be in better form. Roger Varian increased his record at Royal Ascot by 150% with three winners and has continued to bang in the winners this week.
Chipchase Stakes 2019 Summary
Invincible Army sets a high standard for the others to aim at but a 5lb penalty isn’t going to make winning this race easy, especially after his exertions at Royal Ascot last week. Mr Lupton is also penalised for winning a weak Group 2, but Glorious Journey would be interesting if he comes here instead of Newmarket.
However, an each-way chance is taken on Laugh A Minute, who comes here with his stable in red-hot form and the track is expected to suit.
