Germany U21 vs Romania U21 Game Preview
Both teams finished the group stage at the top of their respective groups and with seven points, and although such record was expected from Germany, the Romanians surprised after ending above France, England, and Croatia. Germany are firm favourites to reach the final, but they cannot underestimate the Little Tricolours who already upset the odds against all three opponents in the group stage.
Germany U21 Team News and Latest Form
Germany topped Group B at the U21 European Championship with seven points and tournament-high ten goals. Following a pair of victories over Denmark and Serbia, head coach Stefan Kuntz kept faith in the same starting eleven against Austria in a game that finished 1-1. Gian-Luca Waldschmidt scored a long-range beauty, but a questionable penalty decision allowed Austria to tie the score. It was the third penalty Germany had allowed in the tournament, and they conceded three goals in total.
With an extra day to prepare than Romania, there is little chance of Kuntz making a lot of changes here. Benjamin Henrichs is suspended, which means Maximilian Mittelstädt is probable to start at left-back while the rest of starting XI should keep their place in this one.
Germany is without a defeat in the previous 15 matches and the last time they lost was in October 2017 when Norway beat them, 3-1. Also, the Germans failed to find the back of the net only once in the last 21 games, and even though Romania kept the clean sheet against France, it is hard to expect them to do it here.
Romania U21 Team News and Latest Form
Romania opened the European Under-21 Championship win an unexpectedly big 4-1 victory over favoured Croatia, and they even managed to defeat England in the next match, 4-2. A 0-0 draw with France was just what they needed to secure a place in the semis and at the upcoming Olympics.
Expect to see defenders Florin Bogdan Stefan and Alex Pascanu to return in the clash with Germany with midfielders Andrei Ivan, Dennis Man, and Tudor Baluta to get a starting nod. Romania plays a quite attractive and high energy style of football while they also have massive support from the stands. With one day less to prepare than Germany, there is a possibility they have tired legs in the second 45 minutes.
The Little Tricolours suffered only one loss in the last ten matches, and they kept the clean sheet in five of them, but it’s not going to be easy to keep the Germans away from goal, especially with Waldschmidt in an excellent form.
Germany U21 vs Romania U21 Head to Head
Germany and Romania have met on four occasions since 2000, and the Germans have a 2-0 advantage over Romania with a couple of draws. Both victories came in the U21 European Championship qualifiers and were the big ones; a 5-1 win in 2006 and an 8-0 win in the latest clash in 2014.
