Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Grand Cup Stakes 2019 Main Contenders

Mekong

Mekong has been well-backed in the early ante-post markets and it’s easy to see why after he ran a great race to be second behind Dee Ex Bee on this year’s seasonal debut. He looks a typical improving four-year-old for trainer Sir Michael Stoute and he ran an okay race off a mark of 91 when fourth in the Melrose Handicap at last year’s Ebor Meeting.

Weekender

Ran poorly over two-miles behind Dee Ex Bee on his seasonal debut but got back on track back over his favourite trip of around 14-furlongs last time. He also has some excellent form at York, where he was second in this race last year before running a stormer off top-weight and a mark of 112 in last year’s Ebor Handicap. Officially the top-rated horse and will surely go close with his stable in good form.

Austrian School

Mark Johnston-trained four-year-old that was made favourite for the Chester Cup after a facile success on his seasonal debut. His flop there can be forgiven because of the soft ground but he seemingly had no excuses when finishing behind Mekong at Sandown after that, a horse he also finished behind when they were second and third at Ascot last season.

Gold Mount

Six-year-old that was rated as high as 120 at his peak when racing in Hong Kong at distances up to 12-furlongs, but he was only fourth on his final start in Meydan behind the useful Cross Counter. Interesting on his first start in England for new trainer Ian Williams but he has to overcome a 77-day absence.

Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Grand Cup Stakes 2019 Summary

Gold Mount could make an instant hit in England if Ian Williams can bring him back to his best but that’s quite an ask on his first start for him. Austrian School should run a solid race, but he has already twice finished behind Mekong, who looks to have more potential for improvement. However, Weekender looks a knocking each-way bet against the favourite considering his form at York, which includes just being beaten in last year’s edition.
