Boxing Tip: Frampton vs. Gutierrez
Northern Ireland’s Carl Frampton will take on Andres Gutierrez next weekend, in what is an eliminator fight for the WBC Featherweight title in Belfast. Having lost out to Leo Santa Cruz by a majority decision back in January, Frampton will return to the ring for the first time, in the hope of returning to winning ways against his Mexican opponent.
Despite many backing the home favourite to overcome his more inexperienced opponent, it could well be a closer contest than expected, with Gutierrez already demonstrating his potential within the sport. Punters are expected to back their favourite at their online bookmaker, so let’s take a look at the two fighters, as well as offering our top betting tip for the fight.
Carl Frampton
Frampton became the first boxer from Northern Ireland to win a world boxing title in two different weight classes, however his recent loss saw him take a short break from the sport. Frampton has now set his sights on the WBC Featherweight belt, with a win over Gutierrez potentially setting up a clash with current champion Gary Russell Jr.
With a 23-1 career record, that includes 14 knockouts, Frampton will be the overwhelming favourite for the fight. Using his orthodox stance and immense work rate, Frampton will look to throw combinations rather than power punches. He has won five out of his last six fights.
Andres Gutierrez
Gutierrez is undoubtedly one of the rising stars of the Featherweight division, with the Mexican having recovered well from a controversial defeat to Cristian Mijares, overcoming Wallington Orobio last time around.
Gutierezz had also been eying a potential bout with champion Santa Cruz before his defeat, with his bout with Frampton giving him another opportunity. With a 35-1-1 record, including 25 knockouts, Frampton will be more than aware of the threat posed by Gutierrez. With a better reach than Frampton, the Mexican will also be aiming to take advantage of his substantial punching power.
Top Betting Tip
Frampton is understandably the heavy favourite for the fight, however with many bookmakers offering increasingly short odds on such an outcome, simply backing him to win the fight is unlikely to bring in any substantial winnings.
As a result, our top betting tip is to back Frampton to win by a unanimous decision, which can be found at best odds of 1/8 on at William Hill. Given the fact that Gutierrez can often be somewhat of a wild and erratic fighter, Frampton will be confident of breaking the Mexican down with his combinations and workmanlike style. Frampton is considered as the No.2 ranked Featherweight in the world for good reason.
