The Lockinge Stakes is the first Group 1 mile-race of the season for horses aged four and older and it takes place at Newbury (Saturday 18 May). First run in 1958, it has been won by several multiple Group 1 winners since the turn of the century. That list includes Hawk Wing, Rakti, Paco Boy, Canford Cliffs, and Frankel.

Lockinge Stakes Main Challengers 2019
Le Brivido
Aidan O’Brien trained five-year-old that has won three races. However, he looks very short in the market considering he finished behind two lower-rated horses on his seasonal debut and he’s drawn very wide in stall-14.
Laurens
Multiple Group 1 winner who is bidding to become the second filly in a row to win his prestigious prize. She’s not had a prep race but she was second in the 1,000 Guineas first-time out last season. However, she doesn’t look ideally drawn in stall-12.
Beat The Bank
Retained his 100% record in Group 2 company when winning on his seasonal debut, but it has to be a big worry that he’s been beaten in the six Group 1 Races he’s contested, including when well-beaten in this race last year.
Lord Glitters
Ran well to be third in what was probably a better race than this in Meydan 49 days ago and his sparkling turn-of-foot is always a potent weapon. However, he’s been beaten in all four Group 1 Races he’s contested and is another that has a high-draw.
Mustashry
Yet to win a Group 1 but he has won at Group 2 level. He was weak in the market before his seasonal debut, but he wasn’t disgraced when trying to concede 5lb to two decent rivals. The second that day has since franked the form with a win at Chester, and Mustashry could go close from what looks an ideal draw in stall-five.
Mythical Magic
Didn’t look up to Group class until winning a Group 2 impressively by three-lengths on the turf track at Meydan last time. He does have to prove as good on a straight course, but he has to be respected from a low draw.
Lockinge Stakes Summary 2019
There doesn’t look to be a star-miler amongst this year’s older horses, with Laurens being the only horse that’s won multiple Group 1 races. However, she hasn’t had a prep run and is also drawn higher than any of the last 10 winners. La Brivido and Lord Glitters also have high-draws, as well as having something to prove at this level, whilst Beat The Bank has yet to prove himself a Group 1 horse.
That’s why it could be worth taking a chance on Mustashry, who should relish the fast conditions, and looks to have an ideal draw in stall-five.
