The Open 2017, hosted by Royal Birkdale from July 20th through to the 23rd, will once again bring the top players in the sport together. This is the third major of the year after Sergio Garcia’s triumph at the Masters and then Brooks Koepka sweeping the field at the US Open. Next up is The Open which is into its 146th edition. This will be the 10th time that Royal Birkdale, in Southport, will have hosted the famous event.
The most recent edition hosted at Royal Birkdale was back in 2008 when Padraig Harrington created a little history for himself in defending his 2007 title that he had landed at Carnoustie. Will there be a home nations winner coming through to take the title this year? Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy was the last to do so, winning in 2014 but no Englishman has won their home Major since Nick Faldo’s second triumph back in 1990 at St Andrews.
Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood are all strong-trading home nations players heading to The Open, but it is Americans leading the way in the betting market at Paddy power, with Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth joint 14/1 favourites.
