Zurich Classic New Orleans Preview

Zurich Classic New Orleans Preview

The next stop on the PGA Tour this season is the Zurich Classic in New Orleans. The event will take place at TPC Louisiana and it has been held annually since 1958. However, the format has changed somewhat since then and now the Zurich Classic is a team event.

There are eighty teams each with two players and the first player of the team is chosen using the Tour priority rankings. The partner of the first player must be a PGA Tour member or invited by the sponsor to participate in the tournament.

The format differs for each day and we will see fourball for the first and third rounds and alternate shot for the second and fourth rounds.

The Favourite

Arguably the most eye-catching pair for this tournament is Jason Day and Adam Scott. The Australian duo have previous form as a double act having won the 2013 World Cup of Golf together on home soil. Not only did they win, they won in style and if the can come close to a repeat performance here, they will be tough to beat.

Day and Scott are the favourites to win the 2019 Zurich Classic at 13/2 with William Hill.

Defending Champions

It is impossible to ignore the defending champions and Billy Horschel and Scott Piercy return to the venue of their exciting one stroke victory of last year. It was the second time Horschel has won this event, having done so in the previous format in 2013, so he knows what it takes to do well on this golf course.

Both players have performed well at different times during the year and Piercy is coming back from a break and finished T3 last week, so should be raring to go this week. The defending champions make a good bet and they are available at 16/1 with Betfair to win the Zurich Classic for the second year running.

Other Contenders

There are some eye-catching partnerships to watch this week, with Tommy Fleetwood and Sergio Garcia being a great example. The European duo will be hoping to capture the Ryder Cup spirit and Fleetwood finished T4 in this event last year, all be it with a different partner. Garcia and Fleetwood are 8/1 with Unibet.

A look at which players have played well at TPC Louisiana shows Jason Dufner as a potential threat this week. The American has won on this course and has two second place finishes in the past five years, one of which was in the team event of 2018.

He and his partner, Pat Perez have not been playing well this year but returning to this course could bring out the best in Dufner. You can back Dufner and Perez to cause an upset and win the 2019 Zurich Classic at 50/1 with Ladbrokes.
